Kensai Inquisitor

Advice

Liberty's Edge

A player likes the Kensai (as do I) but he prefers the divine route. So he was asking how hard it would be to adapt it to the Inquisitor.

It seemed pretty easy but I'm trying to pick something to take away. All the normal things would apply; no armor profic, no weapon except the one picked, reduced spell progression, etc.

Canny Defense would apply to his Wisdom over Intelligence, as would all the damage bonuses (wisdom instead of Int).

I've thought about taking away the Bane ability in place of all of this or something else if anyone has any options since the Magus loses the Knowledge Pool if i remeber right.

I also have an issue with the fact that a Kensai for the Inquisitor route could still take an armor feat and be fine since it's divine but I already know that wont be an issue. The character doesn't WANT to wear armor (a theme I share) but I still wouldn't hate putting in a rule to strictly prohibit it.

Anyway, help is appreciated to see if it's even balanced to begin with (AKA he just wants a more melee, unarmored version of the inquisitor).

Liberty's Edge

Hmm... just a couple of quick ideas.

Don't drop bane, it's the main source of damage for an inquisitor. If I u want to limit it that's fine, but i would actually look at making it the main focus of the class.

Swap out the solotactics and teamwork feats for fighter level -3 and access to combat feats.

Trade medium armor and shield proficency for weapon focus. Keep simple the inquisitor weapon proficencies.

If you are bent ontaking bane, consider fluffing the with monk abilities. for a better idea here ismy take on the inquisitor archetype sacred fist. it's on the pathfinder database.

Good luck.

Crusader Cleric of Sarenrae 1 / Sohei 2 / Inquisitor 17 will give the same feeling without needing to homebrew anything.

Dervish Dance and Crusaders flurry will give you dex to damage and flurry with the scimitar for a dex build. Monk will give you wis to AC, couple it with high dex and you have a great AC for an unarmored character. Glory domain gives Shield of Faith for extra AC too. Also, a sohei can always act in a surprise round even if he does not notice his enemies, though he remains flat-footed until he acts. You delay the inquisitor class features, but you still take all the important features as the last 3 lvls are probably lackluster.

Very feat starved at low lvls though. Essentially it needs Weapon Finesse, Dervish Dance and crusader's flurry asap and the last two ones can only be obtained by lvl 2, so being a Human will not help much.

Essentially you should go like this:

1 Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (scimitar) (bonus), Toughness if human
3 Dervish Dance
5 Crusader's Flurry

An alternative is a lvl of fighter after the lvl of cleric. The build would be Crusader Cleric of Sarenrae 1 / Fighter 1 / Sohei 2 / Inquisitor 16

Feats would go like this:

1 Weapon Finesse, Weapon Focus (scimitar) (bonus)
2 Dervish Dance
3 Crusader's Flurry, Dodge (bonus)
4 Deflect Arrows (bonus)
5 Judgment Surge

You delay wis to AC for one lvl, but you have a MUCH better feat progression and flurry two lvls faster, as well as having judgment surge to go along with your first lvl of inquisitor for getting back your lost lvls as far as your jusgments are concerned. I actually suggest this route whatever lvl you may start.

If you go Human, take the alt racial trait that changes a feat for another +2 to a stat. Put one +2 on Dex and the other +2 on Wis. Of course, in this case an Azata-Blooded Aasimar works better.

try the warpriest ACG class--i find there's some odd similarities between it and the magus (which makes sense, since magus is effectively a wizard/fighter hybrid), while staying decidedly divine-oriented
