Grappling in the air

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

I apologise if this has been asked before but while making a Summoner for a game I'm due to start in a few weeks, I had an idea for my eidolon.

Using Fly by attack and lots of grapple and magic flying, would it be possible to fly in, grab someone, fly up and drop them for some major damage? Surely there must be something in the rules about flying while grappling someone and doing this because it has to be too good to be true...

Flyby Attack

This creature can make an attack before and after it moves while flying.

Prerequisite: Fly speed.

Benefit: When flying, the creature can take a move action and another standard action at any point during the move. The creature cannot take a second move action during a round when it makes a flyby attack.

Normal: Without this feat, the creature takes a standard action either before or after its move.

--- Flyby attack (despite the name) will let you perform the standard action to grab someone.

Unfortunately, the maneuver you need to pick up and drop someone are

. Once you are grappling an opponent, a successful check allows you to continue grappling the foe, and also allows you to perform one of the following actions (as part of the standard action spent to maintain the grapple).

Move: You can move both yourself and your target up to half your speed. At the end of your movement, you can place your target in any square adjacent to you. If you attempt to place your foe in a hazardous location, such as in a wall of fire or over a pit, the target receives a free attempt to break your grapple with a +4 bonus.

This is a standard action, or a move action with greater grapple. You would need to Move (the swooping in and out part) , establish a grapple ( a move action) and make the grapple check to move the grapple (a standard action) Which is more actions than you have.

So you can't swoop in out of the sky, establish a grapple, and fly away with your opponent in the same round. The best you could do would be to pick up the Improved grapple feat. If you start next to them you can grapple (move) then move the grapple (standard) to carry them up into the air.

Or with greater grapple you can fly in, establish the grapple on round one, and then on round two double move at half speed (with two grapple checks) and then release your opponent as a free action.

- I can't see any way to get flyby attack and grapple to really synergize.
