I knew the rogue was carrying a cannon around in a portable hole, which was interesting but I found out last night he's been planning to sneak attack with it.
Now I'm pretty comfortable telling my player that this is is not possible under our house rules, but it would be nice to have something in the published rules to back me up.
Does anyone know of a cut and dried rules argument to back up what I presume to be common sense here? Failing this your rationalizations for or against, or comments are of course welcome.

Actually...
You CAN Sneak Attack with a cannon, a folding chair, a toothpaste tube, or the Death Star. There is no rule anywhere that states that a Rogue can only Sneak Attack with a Rogue weapon, a item that is commonly considered a weapon, or even a sharp object. In fact, a Large sized Rogue attacking with surprise can Throw Anything a Tiny sized Rogue at a dude, and they will likely BOTH get Sneak Attack damage. Rogues can generally add Sneak Attack dice to anything provided that:
1.) the target is flat-footed or the equivalent.
2.) The Rogue is no more than 30ft from the target's vitals, and can sense them.
So really, if popping open a bag of holding and firing a cannon on a guy point-blank is feasible AT ALL, and the Rogue does it, he ought to do it xd6 points better than the Fighter.
Personally, though, I'd just stuff a dude in the BoH with the cannon, light the wick, and close the bag.
Oh, then run. :)
