Noob Question - Does this ability keys off Character levels or Class levels?

Sorry if this is a Noob question. But as certain powers explicitly states they key off class levels and some other keys off character levels, what does the below power key off?

Shattering Strike (Ex)

At 2nd level, a two-handed fighter gains a +1 bonus to CMB and CMD on sunder attempts and on damage rolls made against objects. These bonuses increase by +1 for every four levels beyond 2nd.

This ability replaces Bravery.

When it says four levels beyond 2nd, does it means Character levels or Fighter Levels?

Fighter levels. I don't believe there are any class related abilities anymore that key off Character level. That is one of the things they fixed from 3.5.

If a power comes from a specific class it only improves with levels of that specific class unless explicitly noted otherwise.

Since all the Character archetypes are just different flavors of the one class, they all still require advancement in the primary class to improve.

If you get an ability because of your race then it goes off of Hit Dice (total character level.)

If the ability comes from a class then it is based off of class levels.

Thanks for clearing that up!

What got me confused is the Ranger's Track and Rogue's Trap finding abilities.

Rogue wrote:

Trapfinding

A rogue adds 1/2 her level to Perception skill checks made to locate traps and to Disable Device skill checks (minimum +1). A rogue can use Disable Device to disarm magic traps.

Ranger wrote:

Track (Ex)

A ranger adds half his level (minimum 1) to Survival skill checks made to follow or identify tracks.

They just say level. So I assume they meant character levels.

What confused me even more is that some other abilities like the Rogue's Sneak Attack states clearly that it keys of Rogue levels.
For example:

Rogue's Sneak Attack wrote:
This extra damage is 1d6 at 1st level, and increases by 1d6 every two rogue levels thereafter.

Basing on the some abilities clearly states things like every "amount" "class" levels and other just saying "Level/s", should I just assume all abilities key off class levels, unless stated otherwise???

Yes, assume all class features are based on class level.

EDIT: If you want to know why, then imagine what would happen if you got class abilities that scaled with your character level: you take 1 level in each class, and you end up with an allegedly 5th-level character with all the abilities of a 5th-level fighter, a 5th-level wizard, a 5th-level paladin, a 5th-level cleric, and a 5th-level sorcerer.

Doesn't sound like a very good idea, does it? ;)

Lantern Lodge

I can see why! :)

Thanks again for the clarification.
