Effective spell level of spell-like abilities

Rules Questions

Quick question:

What is the 'spell level' for a spell like ability I use? Since this affects concentration DC, penetration abilities through Globes of Invulnerability and the like, it would be great if someone could shed some light on the subject :)

edit: better answer by Snorter for the simple case

If some spell-like abilities don't match existing spells, they are probably about the same level as other SLAs the creature can use equally often per day, stepping up or down levels if it can use the ability less or more frequently. If none of its SLAs are like any existing spell, maybe take the highest spell level that a wizard of the creature's HD could cast for the abilities it can use least often.

Scarab Sages

If it's a true 'spell-like' ability, then it mimics the spell, for most purposes, such as effective spell level, range, duration, save required, effect, etc.

The corner cases exist, where a spell is on the list of several classes, sometimes at different levels. In this case, follow the advice in the core rules;

PFSRD wrote:
Some spell-like abilities duplicate spells that work differently when cast by Characters of different classes. A monster’s spell-like abilities are presumed to be the sorcerer/wizard versions. If the spell in question is not a sorcerer/wizard spell, then default to cleric, druid, bard, paladin, and ranger, in that order.

Caster level is a separate matter, and will usually be stated in the description, being the class level of the class granting the ability, or else be creatures total Hit Dice, if it's a racial ability.

Cleric domains, sorcerer bloodlines, wizard schools, and certain other class features give spell-like abilities that aren't based on spells. What's the effective spell level for these abilities?

The effective spell level for these spell-like abilities is equal to the highest-level spell that a character of that class could normally cast at the level the ability is gained.

For example, a 1st-level elemental bloodline sorcerer has elemental ray as a spell-like ability. Because a sorcerer 1's highest-level spell available is 1st, that spell-like ability counts as a 1st-level spell. A 9th-level elemental bloodline sorcerer has elemental blast as a spell-like ability. Because a sorcerer 9's highest-level spell available is 4th, that spell-like ability counts as a 4th-level spell.
