Changing streams...

Jade Regent

I wonder if it would be possible / feasible to change from a Runelords Campaign (my players have just completed Burnt Offerings), and switch mid-stream into Jade Regent.

Yes, I'd have to slow down the progression quite a bit in the first book of JR, and the encounters would be pretty easy or have to be beefed up a little, but by the time that the players are in the 2nd book, they would only be 1, possibly 2 levels ahead of the curve, and that margin would virtually vanish by the end of the 3rd book.

I heard in a Paizocon podcast that the Players Guide will have some sections on integrating events from Runelords, so I was wondering what others felt about this...

That's basically what I'm doing. We got most of the way through Burnt Offerings when I realized that the AP wasn't going to fit my players that well.

Spoiler:
Specifically, it was when they got into the Glassworks and saw what the goblins were doing. Yeah, Skinsaw and HMM were not going to go over well. I've never been a big horror fan and when I said, "remember that one X-Files episode with the mother under..." Yeah, the whole group shuddered simultaneously. :)

So I ended it fairly quickly and they'll be going into The Brinewall Legacy at level 2 and halfway to level 3.
Spoiler:
I had Nuala, Tsuto, and ... uh ... the bugbear, I can never remember his name, in the Catacombs of Wrath. Nuala, depowered some, was ripping Tsuto a new one for losing his goblins and endangering her plans. The party busted in on the middle of this, killed her and the bugbear, captured Tsuto, and never did get a good look at the quasit (man I'm horrible at names today). The quasit is going to "accompany" them on their trip. I'll either ally her with a big bad or have her independently pester them for the first bit.

So now their characters are having a bit of a downtime for R&R while waiting for a trial (see above spoiler tag). All they know about how JR starts is that it's in Varisia and that they're banned from even thinking of going to the Paizo AP or forum pages until after the first session. :D

My plans are to pad the encounters with either extra monsters or get my hands on the Advanced Bestiary and template up the CR so that they're challenging while being a wee bit of an XP miser until they're back into the proper level band, not that there's much of a gap as it is.

Hmmm, I remember that episode.

I'm actually doing the same thing. Although my change over will likely involve some sort of time warp or shared dream explanation. Reason being I plan on running Rise of the Runelords again once it's re-released.

You could even cut out portions of Brinewall legacy and put in the stuff the need to find into whatever section of the current adventure they are in. This would keep them closer to level as expected.

The Exchange

An easy way to jump into The Brinewall Legacy:

Spoiler:
Lonjiku actually got Rokuro's letter, but he was too ashamed to really read it--so instead of destroying it, he hid it away in Kaijitsu Manor, hoping to forget what he did. After her father's death, Ameiko stumbles upon the letter, and asks the PCs to accompany her to Brinewall.

An abrupt way to skip it:
Spoiler:
Lonjiku didn't just open the warding box, he stole it. Rokuro sent him back to Sandpoint and prepared for an attack after he saw that it had gone missing, without knowing that his son still had it. Lonjiku was sensible enough to keep the box closed and hidden ever since, up until Ameiko found it and decided to show the PCs. Cue visions of their destiny.

Of course with a sufficiently elaborate justification you could put the plot coupons anywhere. I'd suggest the latter approach if the PCs are level 4 or higher; otherwise, the former should be fine.
