The pregen characters at the back of WBG includes an alchemist, but I'm a little uncertain about the extracts he has. Specifically their number. As far as I can tell, he should only have 4 at lvl.1(2+2 for Int), but he has 6. What have I overlooked? Could someone please explain this discrepancy to me?

Maybe he scribed a couple extra formulae from a wizard spellbook or something. If it's a pre-gen, there could be all sorts of background things that happened before the player takes over. It's only 10 gold to scribe a level 1 spell.
Or, it could be a mistake =)

Where is his gold spent at? It could be that he spent gold to copy over a few extra formulas.
I hadn't realized that was an option. Sorry for the newb question, but how much does copying a formulae cost?
Edit: Whoops, question answered! That could explain it, true.
Thanks a bunch, guys!

Here you go. Works the same for the alchemist.
On a technical note it should be a total of 15 gp to inscribe one additional formula -- 10 for actual scribing and 5 to pay the other party for letting you look at their formulas to copy it.

An alchemist can also add formulae to his book just like a wizard adds spells to his spellbook, using the same costs, pages, and time requirements.
Adding Spells to a Wizard's Spellbook:
The process takes 1 hour per spell level. Cantrips (0 levels spells) take 30 minutes to record.
A spell takes up one page of the spellbook per spell level. Even a 0-level spell (cantrip) takes one page. A spellbook has 100 pages.
The cost for writing a new spell into a spellbook depends on the level of the spell, as noted on the following table.
Level 0: 5 gp
Level 1: 10 gp
Level 2: 40 gp
Level 3: 90 gp
Level 4: 160 gp
Level 5: 250 gp
Level 6: 360 gp
Level 7: 490 gp
Level 8: 640 gp
Level 9: 810 gp
If you want to borrow a spellbook to learn the spell:
"In most cases, wizards charge a fee for the privilege of copying spells from their spellbooks. This fee is usually equal to half the cost to write the spell into a spellbook (see Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook). Rare and unique spells might cost significantly more."
If you're good friends, or find a spellbook laying around, then you just pay the cost to write it into your own book.
Also, there's a whole bunch of skill checks involved in deciphering, understanding, and learning the spells. Huge PITA. Ask your DM if he will hand wave it and just let you pay =)
