Quick Question about Disable Device

Rules Questions

Hi all, new here so hope this is the right place to ask this.

Ok so here's the question. If someone attempts to disarm a trap and fails by 4 or less do they know they have failed or would the dm saying "You think you got it" be acceptable. I ask because it says you can retry if you fail by 4 or less.

This seems like GM discretion, you make the ultimate decision on whether that 4 or less was enough to know they failed or if they think they got it, as they cannot retry unless the KNOW they failed the check.

Ah ok I'll probably go with the "Ya you think you got it". I just wanted to make sure there wasn't a rule that would make the dm saying that "wrong".

Not in particular, there may be more information about certain traps in the traps description (if using a remade trap) if so you can go by that, otherwise its a GM's discretion of determining the margin by which a player fails & the information they gain by failing.

Except the bit about re-trying. Because why would you retry when "you think you've got it"?

Trap on door- fail by 5 or more, trap goes off; fail by less than 5 and think you've got it- no retry and trap goes off when you open the door. Doesn't seem right to me. Takes away that little "advantage" of almost getting it.
