Expert Duelist Faction Trait Question

I am making a rogue for PFS. His faction is Taldor and I wanted him to take Expert Duelist.

Here it is:

Expert Duelist (Taldor Faction): In your youth, you
spent countless hours perfecting the art of the duel,
focusing your feints on defeating a single foe. You gain
a +1 trait bonus to your Armor Class so long as you are
adjacent to a single foe. This trait bonus is not applied
to your Armor Class for touch attacks or when denied
your Dex bonus.

Does it mean he gets a +1 bonus to AC if he is only adjacent to one foe, that is one person who is a foe and not any one else including allies or noncombatants OR he gets the bonus if he is only next to one foe and not any other foes, but can be next to allies or noncombatants?
