Interaction of Unarmed Strikes (Monk), Brass Knuckles and Weapon Focus

Rules Questions

We all know Monks can use Brass Knuckles and use their Unarmed Strike damage with them; which is useful when you can magically enhance the Knuckles.

My question is that if you have Weapon Focus: Unarmed Strike, and use Brass Knuckles, as a Monk, would you lose the +1?

Common sense says no, but I could see the case the other way around.

I have played 33 games of PFS with a character that had WF Unarmed Strike at first level and BK as soon as he could afford.

In my experience, about half the tables (GM's) rule you can and the other half you can't.

Exactly, it's a DM call. Why not shoot him an e-mail or a phonecall?

Because I'm looking for a RAW/RAI answer. This isn't for a DM, it's literally a lapse in the rules I'd like clarified.

Also, do the knuckles get enhanced as a pair, or separately?

You will be looking for a while.

I've wanted this clarified since AA and APG came out.

The best answer is a SKR comment that they couldn't use unarmed strike benefits since they are unarmed weapon attacks and not unarmed strikes attacks.

But the actual RAW is debated and hasn't officially been clarified.

Well, here's RAW:

Quote:
Brass Knuckles: These close combat weapons are designed to fit comfortably around the knuckles, narrowing the contact area and therefore magnifying the amount of force delivered by a punch. They allow you to deal lethal damage with unarmed attacks. You may hold, but not wield, a weapon or other object in a hand wearing brass knuckles. You may cast a spell with a somatic component while wearing brass knuckles if you make a concentration check (DC 10 + the level of the spell you're casting). Monks are proficient with brass knuckles and can use their monk unarmed damage when fighting with them.

Brass knuckles are a weapon, therefore they have a separate weapon focus skill than unarmed strike. The only difference between a kama and brass knuckles is that the monk uses unarmed strike damage with the brass knuckles. Not unarmed strike skills such as weapon focus. Similarly if you wanted to use ki pool unarmed strike modifiers such as overcoming DR/lawful at level 10, you would need Ki focus brass knuckles.

Brass knuckles are a single piece of metal with four holes cut out for fingers. Even though they are "knuckles" (plural) they are only one item and only worn on one hand. You could buy a second set for the other hand and enchant it separately if you wished, but a monk does not need a second set.

[Emphasis mine]
This would, in a sense, still mean you attack unarmed.

Also, brass knuckles are listed under Simple Weapons – Unarmed Attacks. This would lead me to believe you are still delivering unarmed strikes, thus the weapon focus (unarmed strike) should apply.

What do you mean you can't WF brass knuckles?
