Paladin without a mount

Rules Questions

My Paladin has just lost his mount to a finger of death (at least it wasn't me!) but most of my feats are mounted combat based. Is there any reason RAW or RAI that I can't take a normal mount until I can summon a new one?

Sovereign Court

nope, take away, and then when the right time has passed, bond with the new horse.

Silver Crusade

Aw man, but why did you not go with the awesome weapon option?

And yes you can use any mount at any time.

I thought long and hard about the weapon option but in the end as I am Svirfneblin lizard rider, I liked the idea of the super hard mount. He puts out more damage than me unless I am charging an evil enemy with my holy lance.

I know it's not exactly optimised but he's fun to roleplay.

And I get to ride up walls and ceilings and charge from weird angles!

Silver Crusade

There is that.

We had a player who geared like that as well. And 90% of the time his mount was either dead/killed, or we ended up in a place that we couldn't uses it.

He was pissed most of the time.

The half-ogre Knight in the game I ran? Or the half-orc fighter/cleric in the game someone else ran?

If it's the Knight, I did tell him ahead of time that was going to be an issue, and we made up a magic item that let him summon a magic mount every time it died (using the Mount spell).

If it's the Fighter/Cleric, yeah, the GM in that game was going out of his way to hose us over at every opportunity if he thought we were 'too powerful'.

Was Option #2.

Yeah, his story was good, but had an odd feeling of what was "over powering"

I even went so far to make a mounted halfling on a dog. And every turn he tried to say "a dog can't do that" SO frustrating.

You can get a normal mount until you qualify for a new one.

They can be hard to get into dungeons.

Buy several. After 5th level the amount of damage your foes do will one shot your horse. I also recommend someone take up profession: chef to deal with the extra meat.

Yeah, he had great stories and ruined them with stupid homebrew rules that were made up on the spot. Just a few (all announced in game, after character creation was done)...

1) Anyone carrying a great sword receives a -2 to stealth. Halflings get a bigger penalty since the great sword is taller than them.

2) Wizards don't get their two free spells per level (told at level up).

3) You can't stealth in a jungle if someone is within 60 feet of you.

4) If you roll a number, and I misunderstand it, and a TPK results, then you all make new characters.

5) I reserve the right to stop the game for 20 minutes to talk you out of your action and into one that get's you killed, then I grin and laugh about it and admit you had a 1 in 20 chance of succeeding at my preferred action, and a 95% at succeeding at your own.

and you kept playing with this supposed dm? why?

in 3.5 i ran games and one guy would always fricking pick a druid with a dog. and ask me to allow the most ridiculousness thing with the dog climbing ropes, ladders, slides you name it. i think as a dm it is a happy medium, between allowing characters to use there mounts or animal companions, and not taking so much time to look up obscure rules, abuse hte situation. or abusing the situation like summoning your mount on a switch across the room to turn off the lava by killing it in the process.
i never do mounts because i hate the math and extra character sheets. I can honestly sya i never have taken a single skill point in ride, or a feat of the same nature. but for those players who want to i would makes damn sure to talk with your dm and have all the relevant info ahead of time.

I didn't. About half of those happened after I quit. Others had more patience, but eventually his game spontaneously exploded (after going through about 4 other players after I left).

I've seen a dog climb a ladder before. Granted, it taught itself to do it to get at food. So I can see that happening, but not the rope. On the other hand, I'd make the guy spend a trick on it. Same with the slide, I've seen a dog run up a playground slide, but it was taught to do it.

Everything I wanted my dog to do in game, I knew he could be trained to do IRL. A friend of mine trains rescue and search dogs for uses in disaster areas. Even a dog finding a body that is underwater.

Dogs can do just about anything, just need to spend a trick on it.
