Light cantrip + Prestidigitation?

Rules Questions

Hi

Can I cast Light on a small pebble or anything weighting (alot) less than 1 pound to make it glow and make light, and then use Prestidigitation to levitate it and make it follow me?
Or would I actually need Mage Hand for this?

If thats not possible, could Prestidigitation at least be used to hold it in place, floating in mid-air?

While doing that can I do other stuff, like read a book, search a chest, etc or do I actually have to keep concentrating on it the whole time?

Sure I can hold it, or place the pebble down somewhere, and it will do the same thing, but the floating in midair just seems cooler.

Yes, I know I could also use Dancing Lights to achieve a similar effect.

Prestidigitation says it can slowly lift 1 lb. of material.

That kind of implies that you can't move things about like mage hand, much less "anchor them to you magically," as the word lift generally means "in an upward motion"

Really though, why would you want to do this? Cast light on a pin or something and append that on your vest or cloak, or tuck it in your belt. There's no need whatsoever for any spell other than light.

I know I don't actually NEED it, but since I'll have Prestidigitation (g%&&~$it who came up with that name?) anyway, I thought I could use it to make it a bit more fun :)

Yes, the "lift" vs "move around" was the reason I asked. That sounds too much like duplicating Mage Hand, even for a far smaller item, but thats still something the spell shouldn't do.

But what about placing the pebble on my outstretched hand, lifting it half an inch, and taking my hand away. It should now float in midair, without moving, till I pick it up again, right?

The spell description says, "A prestidigitation can slowly lift 1 pound of material." That seems like it would clearly cover levitating the pebble, or holding it in place. It's up to your GM whether or not you could have it follow you around, and whether you need to concentrate on it.

If it were my game, I would rule that you couldn't have it follow you, but you could stick it somewhere in midair and have it stay while still doing something else.

Ravingdork, there's no mechanical reason I can think of why you'd need this. But it sure sounds cool!

Quatar, you might want to check out the "Ioun Torch" from the APG. It's basically a burned-out ioun stone with a Continual Flame cast on it; it sheds light and orbits your head without you having to do anything. Similar effect to what you want to achieve, and they're relatively cheap (only 75gp).

To search an area of darkness ahead of you?

I tried to do this in a campaign and the DM said I couldn't because the coin with light cast on it was now a magical item. Nevermind that presidigitation has no such proviso against levitating magical items, that's nonsensical.

Here's a better idea, Quatar:

Take a piece of metal, and shape it into a parabolic dish with a handle on the back, and attach a pebble or some such thing to the inside "corner" of the dish. Cast Light on said pebble.

You now have a flashlight.

Haha, that's actually a cool idea as well, but not sure you can get that past a DM :)

That would work though the pebble will drop the floor 1 hour afterwards. The light on the pebble would also blink out in tens of minutes.

Your GM probably made that ruling because (1) prestidigitation can't move things laterally and (2) mage hand which does move things laterally DOES have a provision against magic items.

(Not that I think a rock with light on it suddenly becomes a magic item.)

I did this very trick in last weeks game, looked quite cool but didnt really add or improve anything mechanically. That and I dropped the copper piece down a 500 ft well.

*chuckle*

Just toss the pebble with your hands :-p

I once had a GM that told me since my wizard used overland flight all the time (near exclusively) that his legs atrophied and he became a cripple.

1) Find a piece of metal wire that has a 1/4 circle curved shape.
2) Attach wire to hat on one side and a pebble on the other.
3)Cast light on rock

Congratulations You're a angler fish, but with light
