We Be Goblins module for RotR

Rise of the Runelords

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I'm starting a second RotR game for a new group of players. I've mentioned it a great many times on these forums and had utterly no luck in planning it. (One player left for Greece for a month, another to the States for three, and I'm off to Ireland for a few weeks... but I'm not one to give up!)

I think the new module would be a fantastic intro to roleplaying and the game rules...

It seems to be engineered for the new Jade Reagent adventure path... However, I think it could just as easily work as an intro for Burnt Offerings.

_____________

I think the shipwreck could easily be replaced with a fireworks shipment for the Swallowtail festival... however, I'd also like to give either Bruthazmus or Nualia a cameo in the adventure path (or at the very least, a mention!)

Where would you place them, and what would you change about the AP to tie it in best?

PostScript:
I am aware this is really, really easy stuff. I'm just quite taken with having a whole forumful of DMs to mince ideas with. Don't judge me too hard. :P

A handful of ideas--needless to say, spoilers for We Be Goblins and RotRL below:
.
.
.
.

  • Have Bruthazmus meeting Vorka as the PCs approach, discussing whether they can have her aid with their upcoming 'operation'.
  • Set the module 2-3 years before the AP, adapt Vorka to make her a devout worshipper of Lamashtu, and have the PCs find an upset Nualia as a foundling--but one marked by Lamashtu, so if the goblins harm her they know they will be in trouble. Obviously this will spoil the 'Nualia is alive?' surprise.
  • Add some Skinsaw cultists to the module; they could be courting Vorka's support.
  • Add some clear sihedron tattoos to some of the corpses in Vorka's residence (perhaps she's already been co-opted to the Skinsaw Men's cause).

Will let you know if I come up with anything else. : )

You might put Bruthazmus right at the beginning, visiting the Licktoads and maybe putting pressure on the chief to hand over the fireworks as tribute. In the end he might give the PCs a trinket to acknowledge their efforts, though that'd be a RP consideration since it'd be too late to use it for anything.

I'd avoid having Nualia about, or even mentioning her, simply to preserve the surprise for the party in ROTRL. But if the game was set close to the events in BO, you might have an unnamed half-elf longshanks visiting, convincing the chief to go to war against Sandpoint...

Ah, so now the licktoad goblins are invading other APs - hoorah!

I will (hopefully) be starting a new RotRL campaign as well, and planned on doing this same thing. All I will be doing to convert it, is changing the chief's speech to the players, having him explain that they are trying to retrieve the fireworks to assist in the raid on Sandpoint. Barring a TPK, I will give fireworks to some of the goblins in the raid. Maybe I'll even have Reta, Chuffy, Poog, and Mogmurch take part. Though I fear the players may have reservations about killing their former characters.

That could make the whole thing more meaningful to them.

Ok, so last night I ran the game. I changed the bit of opening text talking about the failed attempt to burn Sandpoint to rumors of an upcoming raid on Sandpoint. I left the rest of the module unchanged, save for the end. When the PCs returned to the villiage, they saw Tsuto leaving the chief's hut, being escorted by Slorb. When they went to show the chief the fireworks, he congratulated them, and said he had a new mission for them. The "pointy-eared longshank" is helping all the tribes plan a raid on Sandpoint. And that's where we left it. The players are intrigued, and eager to get the campaign going. The true test will be to see how they react at the first true session.
