Random treasure help?

Advice

Hey all, personally I find trawling through the books to find treasure for my PCs both difficult and dull. Difficult as I don't find it easy to find/discern level appropriate gear, and dull as well I really couldn't be bothered going through spell lists to find which can be potions or scrolls or wands, and then having to choose what caster level they were made at and then which I should give out etc...

I know on pg 461 of the core rulebook there a 'random magic item generation' table but it doesn't help out with weapon or armor types, and it's particularly unhelpful when it comes to potions and scrolls as it doesn't specify what they are other than caster/spell level.

My question is this -

Does anyone know of a decent random treasure generator? It doesn't have to be a program, I'm perfectly happy with rolling on a table.

I know that for 3rd Edition they have books with tables for treasure generation. They're probably close enough that you can use them for pathfinder.

At one time I had a table with the "Top Ten Magic Item Types" to pick out the most common types of magic items. I'll have to see if I can dig that one out. Of course, once determining that you need, say, a magic amulet, you still need to determine what type of magic amulet.

One thing you could do is write down treasures on index cards, and when you need one, randomly choose a card. To make it level specific, you can even go through written adventures for Pathfinder and 3rd edition, and write down treasures from those adventures on your cards. You can also add ideas that inspire you.

To reduce the number of cards needed, you can number the lines on a ruled index card 1-10, and then when you draw the card, roll 1d10 to pick a line.

One thing that might be worth doing is taking polls to see what the most commonly used potions and wands are. For potions, the #1 favorite is definitely healing. My character is currently carrying a wand of endure elements if that is helpful to know.

If you can get a hold of the 1st edition Dungeon Master's Guide, that book has some nice tables for randomly generating treasure. I don't know how much of them got into later editions, because I haven't really used those tables.

The GameMastery Guide has the tables you're looking for on pages 118-137

a ha! Right you are Eel.
