Wizard's bonded object

Homebrew and House Rules

I'm looking to make the bonded object more like the familiar, with abilities that scale as the wizard gains levels. Each familiar grants the wizard a special ability, generally a +2 or +3 to a skill, save, or hit points.

I'm trying to come up with abilities for each of the object types: amulet, ring, staff, wand, and weapon but I'm not really happy with anything I've come up with as of yet.

Help me!

I think the scaling that the bonded object already does is more than enough, or are you talking about replacing the given qualities of it?

You could consider looking at the intelligent objects section?

I guess if it comes down to it, you'd have to break down what those objects represent to the wearer, or what those objects mean in a larger historic context

amulets or lockets tend to be worn to ward off evil or provide protection or a reminder of something. -+1 to AC, HP, or saves perhaps? something defensive anyways

Weapons don't need much explanation other than: make them hit more often and do more damage. applying qualities is another route, or providing feats for combat maneuvers if you are using the weapon for that purpose. (eg: free improved or greater trip while using a whip etc)

Rings represent many things, but usually continuations, bonds, or the concept of infinity come to mind. - perhaps re-rolling a d20 1/day?

staffs and wands share similar purposes in that they provide magic users with a leg up and some extra casting once they are out.- bonus to CL or DC's, or maybe one spell of your favoured school cast spontaneously and using up a charge instead of the regular spell?

You might want to check out Wayfinder #3 ...

I did something kind of like this in "Magic of the Inner - Sea Arcanamirium Bond Masters" (page 34)

Granted, this is actually a new feat, Improved Arcane Bond, but you might be able to use it as a guide for what you want to do.

And, as a bonus, there is also the Awaken Arcane Bond feat, so you can make your arcane bond object an intelligent magic item! :)

Thanks, there are a few good ideas in there.

Great - glad you liked it!

I'd love to hear what you end up doing.

I was going thru an older notebook either today or yesterday and found an entry where I wanted to set up a campaign world where EVERY magic item was intelligent. It was tucked into some notes on slavery and such with a side-note suggesting a faction that considered magic item creation to be slavery and another note wondering how prevalent magic items would be in such a world. Plus, bonded items - while intelligent - would actually be shards of the caster's own soul/intellect/id/whatever and thus slightly different from the standard "trapped spirit" items.

Very interesting ideas, I think... (and totally OFF what the OP was after - sorry!)

Interesting! If you ever take the plunge and try this out in a game, sounds like the Awaken Arcane Bond feat could prove useful! :)
