AoO issues with Riders on Mounts

Rules Questions

Imagine a gnome cavalier riding his wolf animal companion...

(a) May targets of the mount's attacks choose to use provoked AoO to hit the rider?

The pair attempt to Bull Rush an orc. They know this will provoke an AoO, but trust the gnome's Mounted Combat feat and high ride skill to keep the wolf safe.

Can the orc use its AoO to attack the gnome? Or must it target the wolf since the wolf is the opponent actually doing the combat maneuver?

(b) Do both rider and mount get an AoO an enemy provokes?

The orc drinks a potion while adjacent to the gnome on the wolf. Do both the gnome and wolf get an AoO on the orc?

A. I would say no the attack has to target the wolf. This is because to provoke an AoO you are doing something that drops your guard and opens you to the attack. The gnome hasn't done anything to drop his guard, the wolf has. Allowing the attack to target a different creature because it's in the same square would be like targeting a familiar when a wizard casts a spell.

B. Yeah if they both threaten the orc when he drinks and both have an available AoO then yes they would both get one. Much the same as if you had two creatures flanking the orc when he drinks.

I think B is actually "Yes, assuming that during the rider's last turn he or she made the DC 15 free action Ride check that allows the mount to also make attacks that turn."

That's a good reason to attempt that Ride check even on turns when the mount has no planned attacks.

The answer to this in SRD/D&D would have been different, but the mechanics for bull rush have changed; in SRD, the bullrusher entered the square of the target. In Pathfinder, the bullrusher provokes an AoO. Since the wolf is bullrushing, he is the only viable target of the AoO. The gnome has done nothing to provoke an AoO. How the gnome got the wolf to bullrush is another matter and is subject to the playing style of the group.

Assuming both threaten the orc, both are eligible to take an AoO. The ride check to fight with combat trained mount is an interesting point and I don't think it is directly covered as to whether it is needed.
