I Need a Trait

Rules Questions

Sovereign Court

I am searching without success for a trait to use in a character build. It seems like a trait that should be out there, but i can't find it. What i would like to do is be able to cast one Orison, one or more times per day (the character is not a spell caster).

Magical Talent, Arcane Dabbler - both of these allow this with a cantrip, but i have not found anything similar for divine spells. Seems like it would be functionally equivalent, and a quick look at the list of Orisons doesn't show me anything that could be abused (although I am quite sure someone out there would be able to munchkin something...).

In a home campaign i know my GM would allow it, but this is a build for PFS so i need it to be legal.

The goal is to have an Alchemist who can cast Create Water... because you just know she will set one of her allies on fire sooner or later ;)

I say you create water the old fashioned way by peeing on them.

It's been my observation that in most traits, they start with a mostly-flavor line that's just sort of a generic descriptor. The second line says "choose a 0-level spell", so I would think an Orison would be fine. I could be wrong, though.

There is a "source of power" consideration. Arcane Dabbling gives arcane spells. Among other things, this makes them subject to arcane spell failure. I don't see any Orisons as overpowered, but I probably wouldn't want a Fighter to have Stabilize, for example.

Arcane Spell Failure - good call, hadn't thought of that aspect of things.

As for Stabilize - I sort of like the idea of the Fighter running up to be a human shield over his fallen comrade and spending his standard action to save their life - very spirit of the game. Where as a fighter who can cast Bleed is just downright creepy ;) - "hey... i'm killing you, don't you dare try to survive!"

Magical Talent looks like it may meet the requirements:

Outside of the fluff text, it just says "choose 1 0-level spell" and nothing about arcane/divine.

Also even the fluff text states "Either from inborn talent, whimsy of the gods, or obsessive study of strange tomes, you have mastered the use of a cantrip."

I could see this being one that a GM may allow.

I haven't read Arcane Dabbling, but Magical Talent grants an SLA, which - IIRC - is not subject to arcane spell failure chance.

You are correct, since a spell-like ability does not have verbal, somatic, focus, or material components, they are not subject to arcane spell failure.

From the PRD on arcane spell failure:

Quote:
Armor interferes with the gestures that a spellcaster must make to cast an arcane spell that has a somatic component.

From the PRD on Spell-like abilities:

Quote:
Spell-like abilities are magical and work just like spells (though they are not spells and so have no verbal, somatic, focus, or material components).

I'll buy that. Magical Talent for a 1/day SLA with no failure chance. Good call Happler!

Thanks for the citation, Happler!

Drech School conjuration (creation) [water]; Level sorcerer/wizard 0
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target one creature or object of size Large or smaller
Duration 1 round
Saving Throw Reflex negates (object); Spell Resistance yes (object)
A sudden downpour soaks the target creature or object. The rain follows the subject up to the range of the spell, soaking the target with water. If the target is on fire, the flames are automatically extinguished. Fires smaller than campfires (such as lanterns and torches) are automatically extinguished by this spell.

Pathfinder spell from the Jason B. I do not know if it legal for Socity.

i LOVE this cantrip... exactly what the character needs - unfortunately the Ultimate Cantrip page says specifically that these are not legal for PFS

Yeah... i noticed this loophole too ;) - Seems like and Orison would work by RAW but not by spirit of the rule

I haven't taken it to my PFS GM although i although i think he might allow it, but i thought if i posted here, maybe one of the official voices on high would weigh in definitively on the issue ;)
