Bookmarks in PDFs: What do you think

Technology

I was having a discussion with my wife about Bookmarks in PDFs. How are they used, how many is the right number and so on.

I tend to use bookmarks in PDFs quite a bit, especially when I'm doing research or using it as a reference to build a character. She likes to use search and feels that bookmarks should be chapters only to avoid clutter (even if they are collapsible).

Of course, everyone has their own preferences and means of using electronic books but we wanted to see what a wider range of people thought about the subject.

Possible questions...
How thorough should bookmarks be?
What kind of content should be bookmarked?
Nested or not nested?
Do you prefer just to make your own or have them already there?

Thanks for your input!

I use both bookmarks and the search function, it depends on what i want to do in a .pdf and on what computer i am running it.

If it is a PDF I am purchasing Bookmarks are an absolute must. PDFs without bookmarks are like buying a car with a broken engine. The more bookmarks the better, but at the very least a bookmarked index.

I don't insist on individual bookmarks for each paragraph of text or each part of a feat or spell description (i.e. one for prerequisites, one for benefit, one for normal, one for special).

Beyond that, bookmark the living bejeezuz out of those PDFs.

Also:
Always nested bookmarks, otherwise they are a mess to go through.

Always nested, always very thorough.

For some reason I find the bookmarks on Paizo PDFs are routinely a page off from where they should be. It's highly annoying.

I cannot say I have noticed that with any regularity.

Also. Love bookmarks, nested ones of course. They make jumping around from spot to spot so much easier.

I do alot of PDF Bookmarking work in my day job so I know the value of a well bookmarked PDF (without going overboard). All of JBE's PDFs are well bookmarked.
