Jominda's Apothecary - what's there, what can she make?

Carrion Crown

I'm having a bit of problem understanding what Jominda is likely to be able to craft. The text says "well-stocked supply of pharmacological provisions, both herbal and alchemical." I've been digging around on the SRD and must be looking in the wrong places because I can't really see a list of these kind of ingredients.

Help, especially links to lists, would be particularly appreciated.

Thanks.

A little further in the text refers to table 6-9 of the Core book and some other examples.

For the potions and components, I think that's left up to you. Supply vs Demand, etc . . .

Cheers,
Shriekback

It's a good question. There also seems to be a lot of potential for overlap between her potions and those at the Unfurling Scroll, since he also can make potions for level 1-3 spell effects. Probably I'll say that she has more potions than Alendru, but also only for relatively low levels. Of course, she also sells spell components and herbal remedies, etc., which aren't in Alendru's place.

Rather than taking the time to make lists, I'm planning on just letting my players ask for things and letting them know if they are available. I would however, appreciate any suggestions about what "low priced magic items" are available at Alendru's place. Also, how forward is he being about offering up the Flesh Golem Manual?

Hope you don't mind me expanding the thread in this way...

Wow I'm blind. A little further? Try next sentence. Thanks.

Not at all. It's something I am struggling with as well.

My PCs immediately cringed at the thought of a FLESH golem manual. They now see the scroll shop keeper as pretty shady, trying to sell what they see as pretty evil literary material.

What I'm planning to do next session, as things are heating up pretty badly, is have him outright just ask the PCs to take it. Say that he's discovered a signature on the inside cover identifying it as belonging to Montignue. Asking the PCs if they know who that is (they do, as the professor asked them to deliver stuff to him as well). My intention is Alendru will say that he is worried he will die soon what with all these attacks and he doesn't want Pharasma to judge him with this hanging over his head.

We'll see if the PCs buy it.

If they do, I intend to not give them the full 6k gold reward since they will have gotten it for nothing.

The book indicates Jominda won't sell her potions unless she trusts the players; Alendru apparently has no such reluctance.

That's a neat idea about the Flesh Golem Manual. I think it is a case where a heavy GM hand is necessary; as written I think it is highly unlikely anyone will figure out the Manual belongs to Montignue.

(Montignue seems to have a real penchant for losing things (or letting things be stolen). I'm curious whether my PCs will be reluctant to hand over all the evil books to him, once they realize how easy it is to steal from him.)

One question I have is how this manual came to be down in Ravengro in the first place.

Spoiler:

In my mind (maybe this is obvious, maybe it's not) the Whispering Way stole it from Lepistadt / Montignue and had it in their possession when they came down to Harrowstone to capture the Warden's spirit. I figure some local Ravengro thief pick-pocketed the flesh golem manual from the Way member when he was in town and then offloaded it to Alendru.

At least that's the only way I can think of that it makes sense to me.
Do you have other ideas?

But you are totally right, this Montignue character seems to need a security system.

It absolutely makes sense that there should be some connection, otherwise it is too much of a coincidence, but

spoiler:
If the WW could have stolen the book, then why did they need the Beast to steal the statute? So maybe it was stolen by someone else, purchased by the WW, and then stolen again from the WW on the way to Ravengro? Since the WW came around Ravengro weeks ago, that gives plenty of time for the book to have recently arrived in Alendru's possession.

My solution is a little silly, but avoids the logical problem.

That does make sense. But I can think of an even simpler explanation that doesn't require Montignue to be robbed left and right...

Spoiler:
You could have this be another one of the forbidden books that Professor Lorrimor was borrowing, and it was stolen from him or he forgot it somewhere like at a tavern where it was nabbed. It could have even been on his person when he died and the thief took it after his death.

Lorrimor having it makes more sense if you have the book contain more than simply Golem making info, perhaps this one has details on rituals of the Whispering Way or a related cult. That would make it fit in more with the other books, this one just happens to have the ability to help you with flesh Golems as well.

An elegant solution. Nicely done.

Couldn't we as GM's just fluff the rules a bit and have this particular copy having been penned by the good Count himself? The WW had gotten hold of it to see if there were primers for the deliberate creation of sentient flesh golems...

So, I've got Jominda selling level 1-3 spell effect potions, Alendru selling some similar potions and also scrolls for level 1-3 arcane spells. We've got some good ideas about the Flesh Golem manual. Any ideas what "low priced magic items" are available at Alendru's place?

Go for some Charms - single use, one roll +1 benefits... say an enchanted rabbits foot that gives a SINGLE one off +1 to a save
