I have been playing around searching for a magus built and came about the scorpion whip. A half elf with ancestral arms exotic weapon proficience whip sounds like a fun "ranged" build for a magus. The dmg of the whip is terrible but in a str build he can two handle it with power atk for spellstrikes when need.
The original whip (from core) clearly states that it provokes an AoO by adjacent foes when use in melee .
Whip: A whip deals no damage to any creature with an armor bonus of +1 or higher or a natural armor bonus of +3 or higher. The whip is treated as a melee weapon with 15- foot reach, though you don’t threaten the area into which you can make an attack. In addition, unlike most other weapons with reach, you can use it against foes anywhere within your reach (including adjacent foes). Using a whip provokes an attack of opportunity, just as if you had used a ranged weapon. You can use the Weapon Finesse feat to apply your Dexterity modifier instead of your Strength modifier to attack rolls with a whip sized for you, even though it isn’t a light weapon.
The scorpion whip in its first printed version also does so (Legacy of Fire AP Player's Guide pg 23).
Scorpion Whip: This weapon looks much like a standard whip but with a series of razor-sharp blades and fangs inset along its tip, giving it the ability to do lethal damage, even to creatures with armor bonuses. In all other ways it works like a normal whip. A creature proficient with whips can use a scorpion whip. Whip-masters of Katapesh usually apply poison the weapon’s spines.
When paizo reprinted it in the Copanions Adventurer's Armory they changed the wording of its description. On the new text it doesnt say nothing about it. Furthermore if you compare both descriptions (old and new) it looks like they intented for it to dont provoke AoO in melee anymore.
"This whip has a series of razor- sharp blades and fangs inset along its tip. It deals lethal damage, even to creatures with armor bonuses. If you are proficient with whips, you can use a scorpion whip."
Is there an errata on the subject or something? I couldn't find any and I have been told that the revised version of the Armory still has the same text.

Another, albeit different question, would be: once you imbue a weapon with spell strike, can you use a trip attempt in place of the attack? The spell discharges on a touch from a weapon anyway, so imagine using the whip to trip a guy while shocking grasping him. That would be cool.

If you go with a literal reading. The general consensus in my local area has been its a whip in all ways that deals lethal damage. (House rule)
However by a strict RAW view. The scorpion whip is weapon with reach property, trip property, and shares proficiency with the whip. The end. As default a reach weapon has 10' reach and cannot be used against adjacent foes, it doesn't provoke like a ranged weapon, and you do threaten with it.
Which does make it an interesting weapon as the only one handed weapon with reach. (But doesn't fill the void for people wanting a whip that isn't crippled by the no damage to armored foes.)
I'd consult with your GM. If going for PFS game I'd go with the RAW view.

Spell storing actually discharges when '...the weapon strikes a creature and the creature takes damage from it, ...'
My personal opinion is no CMB check involves hitting (touching or otherwise). You either succeed or fail, it doesn't trigger then that occur with a hit. (Not always a popular ruling of mine, I'll admit.)
Regardless I am pretty confident that spell storing will not be discharged on most trip attempts as no damage is dealt with the weapon.

It is actually cooler. With the uptated magus's mechanic that went to print if you full attack with spell combat + spellstrike you get all your attacks plus a free one with the touch spell.
So at second level you can trip with your attack and blast away your touch spell with your second free attack. This plus a 30ft reaching whip on an enlarged person magus and later on maneuver mastery with arcane acurancy makes a very interesting combo. You wil not threaten all those squares but you will be practicaly a ranged combatant. As long as you can live with the -2 on attack rolls and any other stacking penalties like power attack...
If your DM decides to rule that scorpion whip provokes AoO you can always have a cestus on the same hand or armor spikes. But i still would like to know if anyone knows of an oficial ruling on the whip thing.

From what I understand (and I am happy to be proven wrong) materials in an AP are the ones to go off, whereas AA is not 'core' if that makes sense.
The AP is the core source, so what it says goes, and in this case the Scorp Whip would provoke.
I saw a similar thread about Hide Vests recently, and that was the line they seemed to take for PFS play.
