How much encounter (CR) can you squeeze...?

I'm fairly at ease with the basic on how to calculate an appropriate CR vs the APL.
where i could use some input is on how much the players can take during the course of an exploration/investigation or else.

Let me be more specific so you have all you can to get an idea.
The group is composed of 4 very strong/experienced and clever level 8 caracters, by the book their APL would be 8 but because of the aformentioned qualities i stayted that this particular group would be APL +1 and so far it seems quite ok!

Now let say this group of APL 9 is exploring a ruin with some traps, puzzles and or course badies.
My concern is how much encouter they can possibly take for it to be a challenging if not frightning experience?
What would be a good ratio of CR for them to encounter during the course of this exploration?

Probably a CR11 or even 12 end boss would make it for an epic conclusion! but what about the rest? 40%,50% or even 70% of the challenge should be APL? how much APL -1, -2 or APL +1, +2 should i put in?
