Need advice on rping a gunslinger.

Advice

So my group will be starting a new campaign here soon and I had the idea of playing an engineer type character from Alkenstar. I've decided I will probably make him a dwarf gunslinger (especially if the final version ups his skill points).

Being from Alkenstar (a dead magic/high technology area) I wanted to play up his love of science and his distrust and/or dislike of magic.

So does anyone have advice on how I can play my character without disrupting party cohesion (everyone else has decided to play casters of one type or another) or having my character getting gimped (ex. no buffs or magic items)?

Thanks in advance!

Sovereign Court

Play up the fact you've never seen magic used; initally put more faith in powder and ball than their silly "components. Especially if you made your gun yourself. This doesn't mean "Resist every spell, even Cures." Just make sure they know that you've made it THIS far without their "Magic Missiles." Until Fireballs start getting thrown around, "just shooting them" was always the best strategy. And, on that note, remind them of all the things science has done without violently warping reality and how much "simpler" it is.

This angle can then grow into either an appreciation or detestment of magic, depending on whatever angle you want to go with at that point.

Liberty's Edge

Alchemy's your friend here, I would imagine most Alchemists would hail from the same location if they weren't strangely dependant on magic.

Many low level potions can have their effects either duplicated or mimicked with alchemy and skills. For instance the treat deadly wounds use of the heal skill would be extremely useful in the magic dead lands.

The biggest problem I have with a gunslinger is that without magic (and even with from my experience) the class doesn't hold up well against 'magicked up' competition.

One book I personally Suggest is the Silicon Mage.

Also, I'd totally play a character like this as a crotchy old man.

"Magic? HA! Magic is for pussies! A real man kills with his strength alone and that's why I use a gun! And If that doesn't work I use ANOTHER gun!"

I once played an elf in a Sundered Skies game that used gun blades. He couldn't use any magical item of any sort due to a hindrance I took. He also hated elves and thought that the magic the elves used made them "queer" and that they were tainting everyone around the skies with their "queer energy." (This is not my personal viewpoint nor do I have anything against homosexuals. I was just rping the character and due to that he had an arogant attitude and similar viewpoints as those from the Wild West, it made sense).
