Norse gods after Ragnarok

Homebrew and House Rules

Did anyone ever play in a campaign that occurred after Ragnarok?

If so, what gods did you use? Which of the nine worlds survived and in what form.

Thanks.

I am considering exactly such a scenario for my 17th Century campaign. Odin, Thor, and Loki are dead, as are most of the gods and goddesses.

Baldur will eventually return to rule over a new age, but that is in the future. Nanna will be returning with him. Gerd, I think, also may have survived and is sleeping under a glacier in the far north. I also had the idea of Sif surviving and establishing new projects.

In the meantime, the world is being taken over by Christianity and Islam. I haven't thought much of what will happen when Baldur gets back. Maybe after a major apocalypse he'll show up to say "Here I am to rebuild the world." Since I have plans to introduce time travel at some point, this could have an effect.

In a different campaign idea, I had the idea that in the future, exploration of the outer solar system finds the ruins of a space outpost that was destroyed in some sort of space war. Further searching discovers that the people manning the outpost had resemblance to the Norse gods, and the invaders had resemblance to the Jotuns.

I might combine the two ideas.

You could go the Battlestar Galactica route and have Baldur be the leader of a group of refugees fleeing from the utter destruction of their home world/plane.

When they arrive at their "promised land" they might not be inclined to listen to anyone saying "we were here first".

I know that, according to lore, Thor's twin sons Magni and Modi inherit his belt and hammer in some combination. His son and daughter by Sif (Ullr and Thrud) also survive.

There are quite a few resources online that talk about who survives Ragnarok. (or comes back from Helheim like Baldur)

Thanks for replying.

I've done my homework.

Deceased :

Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdall, and Loki
Sun, Moon
Fenrir, Midgard Serpent - Jörmungandr

Surviving gods:

Vídarr and Váli

Módi and Magni

After that Baldr shall come thither, and Hödr, from Hel.

Hœnir chooses wooden slips for the purpose of prophecy

Sól will bear a daughter before Fenrir assails her, and that after Ragnarök this daughter will continue her mother's path.

Njörðr's status as a hostage during the earlier Æsir-Vanir War, and that he will "come back home among the wise Vanir" at "the doom of men."

From the last statement, I suspect the "home of the Vanir" survives and so do many of the Vanir, divinities of earth, fertility and prosperity, since the 'new earth' is bountiful.

I was wondering if anyone had a campaign world with these gods.

Also, there is no mention of the fates of any other gods and, especially, goddesses.

Thanks again.

For my own campaign, I created a daughter of Njordr and Skade, named Inyr, and who ended up becoming the goddess of taverns.

Also, as a result of another thread on this board, I decided to incorporate a goddess from my homebrew Kosaka mythos into the Norse mythology, with her followers claiming that this goddess, Neriya, would survive Ragnarok and ruling over a realm in which women rule.

I started work on a story idea involving a granddaughter of Loki.

Speaking of Loki, his granddaughter, and Hel, I think Loki's daughter Hel would be likely to survive Ragnarok, since she has to be in charge of Hel and all.

Another thread on this forum brought up the possibility that Isis from the Egyptian pantheon could get caught up in a medieval Norse non-christian campaign. In a post-Ragnarok setting, Isis could get involved with Baldur, if we allow conflation with Roman Empire mystery cults.

But then, if we start bringing in things from other mythoses, then the fun never stops.
