OK.Here is the question. Can a mounted warrior on a large mount attack a small or smaller opponent who is on the ground, or would he need reach?
Does the elevation from being on a large mount count as being more than 2 spaces or squares away?
Well...I wouldn't think so. In most games I have played in we assume that the rider of the mount is in what ever square he wants(that is part of the mount,of course)
Then again, I was on the loosing end of a duel with a paladin on a mount who kept shifting to the 'back part' of his mount.
I would think you could just lean over and stab the guy :p

The rider takes up the same space as the mount. He can attack an opponent adjacent at ground level to the mount, unless he uses a reach weapon (in which case he can attack any creature 10 feet away from the mount, but not creatures adjacent to the mount). He can likewise be attacked, flanked etc. by creatures that threaten the mount's space.
He gets a +1 bonus for attacking from a higher position as mentioned.
