New Player Looking for Some Help

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Hi everyone,

I just started playing Pathfinder with my friends after giving D&D 4th a try.

I'm the DM and together we made some characters and put them through a mock battle. We found the combat a little daunting. Trying to figure out what we can do in a single turn and how a charge effects a two-handed weapon and how much damage extra said two-handed weapon does, etc. etc. made us have to constantly double and triple check the rule book.

Are there any official or thrid-party supplements to help with this? Maybe a PDF explaining briefly what we can do in a turn and what the general effect is?

Thanks

Dunno, it's pretty well written in the combat chapter of the book.

A charge adds a +2 bonus to attack, not to damage. You alsto take a -2 penalty to AC until your next turn.

I don't think there is a 3pp for easy learning of combat, bu i may be wrong.
Better ask here.

The rules can be confusing when you are new to the system. Most people are brought into the game by more experienced players who help them learn the ropes. I would suggest asking specific questions here.
You should also bear in mind that not every rule is explained as well as it should be so what we tell you will not always match what the book says even when we are correct.

I was really just wondering if there was something I could print out to give to the players so they could reference what an attack does instead of having to flip through the rulebook.

The GameMastery Guide has a handy 1 page rules reference.

If you're up for spending $5 on a PDF, the Pathfinder SORD is incredibly handy for learning Pathfinder combat. It has practically everything you'd ever need in a 36 page document. I find it very useful for my games.

The above is exactly what you need Samort7, and yea it can definately be daunting for a group entirely new to the game. You have to get a feel for the way things interact. One thing you should be prepared for is to make mistakes. You will make mistakes, and that is OK. Make sure the whole group is aware of that and that things will be corrected as you find them. It is more important to have fun then to worry about getting every single rule right. I gaurantee every single one of us here on these boards made gross errors regarding the rules when they first started playing, I know I did.

A few words of advice though. Make sure everyone has all their attack routines written down and worked out ahead of time. If the fighter is carrying both a handaxe and a greatsword, make sure both their respective attacks are written down on the character sheet with all the appropriate +'s and -'s.

And if they have an option that might change that, have a separate entry in the attack section for it. For instance, if the fighter has power attack, make sure they have one entry for their greatsword with power attack and one without so you dont have to do the math on the fly. Same thing with casters and spells and such. In fact, I strongly recommend you make use of perrams spellbook here. And have casters print out cards with their respective spells on them (much like many people do with powers in 4E).

Gorbacz, that Combat Referance Sheet looks like just what I wanted! The SORD PF seems a little too intense for me right now (perhaps I'll get it further down the line). I just wanted a simpler approach. Thanks again! And Kolokotroni, your suggestion of making all the players write out and figure out their attack routines is also an awesome idea! Thank you guys so much! I'm feeling better already.

I'm also looking foward to that beginner set Paizo said they would be releasing shortly!

Hey, glad to hear you made the switch, I'm a big fan of the 3.5 system which Pathfinder is a part of. Some friends and I tried 4th after being use 3.5 for years, it was donting at times and felt like a Tome of Battle rip off, by the way Tome of Battle is basically band with all my friends, sorry rant over. Kolotroni is right every variation of an attack should be written down, escpecially thoughs moded by feats, like power attack. Cards work great for spells, as do a seperate sheet of paper with all spells written down with page # for complete states of the spell. Also favorite spells and ones prepared have basic info written down by name. Example Magic Missile sor/wiz lvl 1, Range100 ft + 10 ft per caster lvl, dm d4+1 per missile (1 missile + 1 per 2 caster lvl to max of 5 at lvl 9), auto hit, saving throw N/A, spell resistance yes. Card idea works great for straight forword spells, but more complex ones, such as Wish, refrence the full discription.

Glad to help, if you run into any other problems or have specific questions please feel free to ask around here. Usually between us we can figure most stuff out. Good luck and happy gaming!
