Hi all, first off want to say hello as coming to pathfinder after getting sick of all the crap over at you know where and i must say it feels so good to back.. To see the names of Eric Mona and James Jacobs again brings me right back to my days of searching through Cauldron and those wonderful adventures...
So we are starting up a campaign soonish and now the hunt for new characters is happening. I was going for a fighter/wizard first off then i saw Magus...very nice from what i can see on the playtest download. but my question is, if i take one lvl wizard as i wanted a bonded item as part of my backstory and having a few more 1st lvl spells always helps...
If i made the wizard a specialist in this case abduration... would the prohibited schools that i have to take have any impact on my Magus spells??
Thanks in advance
Nick

welcome to the boards!
To answer your question, whatever schools you pick as your opposition schools are only opposition with regard to your wizard class levels.
By the same token, you'd only get a bonus wizard spell slot for abjuration spells. You would not get an extra magus spell slot.
hope that helps!

Welcome to the boards.
Like Dal Selpher mentioned, your specialist school bonus spells and restricted school only applies to wizard casting.
In regards to going wizard for 1 level, are you doing it just for arcane bond? Are you looking for just a bonded weapon or what exactly? I am not certain as I dont have my copy of UM in front of me, but I think one of the archetypes allowed a bonded weapon. Can someone who does have access to their ultimate magic check?

You be thinking about the bloodbound magus matey.
On the other hand, I really think that the reasons you stated aren't very helpful for that one level tradeoff. Remember that your wizard spells can't be used in spell combat without the arcana, and with it they are still subject to arcane spell failure if they have a somatic component.
An heirloom weapon which serves as the weapon you always enchant from your arcane pool can serve just as well without leaving the class or even the standard archetype.

Welcome back into the fold.
Whatever class feture/choices you make for the wizard have no direct bearing on your magus spellcasting.
You should be aware, that you cannot use wizard spells without a chance of arcane spell failure and cannot use spellcombat and spellstrike with wizard spells unless you take the broad study magus arcana ability.
If you want a fighter/mage that is primarily good at melee go with a magus.
If you want a fighter/mage that is primarily good as a caster go with an eldritch knight build.
In any case if I where you, I would wait for the Ultimate Magic rule book to come out, before settling on any one choice. You never know what options may be available. I for one would not waste a level on the wizard class with my magus.

yeah im aware of the normal rules for the spells and what will apply in combat and the wizards ones wont..im not an uber player if a lvl of something fits for the roleplay side then thats where i go, and also the abjuration specalist abilities of the energy resist and +1 deflection ability will help me and the group.. Not got ultimate magic as of yet..so may change..
ty for the speedy answers :)
So good to be back :)
