Alright, so I've been rattling around this concept for a redeemer of Sarenrae for a home-game I'm in and I can't help but wonder, is it possible to deal non-lethal damage with magic weapons?
Now, I'm not talking about using a flaming sword to deal non-lethal, because unless you had some way of making the fire non-lethal (merciful enchant, perhaps?) the fire itself would deal lethal damage; but what about the +1 part? Can you use a weapon that's simply +1 (without merciful thrown on at that point) with the -4 penalty for using a lethal weapon to do non-lethal damage, or does the magic give that concept the ban-hammer?

So it seems reasonable, eh? My biggest concern was whether or not there's anything specifically in the rules about magic weapons and whatnot that would prevent it from being allowable.
Namely I wanted to challenge myself on the roleplaying/in-game aspects of making a paladin that, while cynical and grim, still fights to try to redeem those that would fight him on the off chance that he can actually save those that really need it.

There's already precedent for non-lethal being able to "mask" all damage types. A weapon with the merciful property specifically states that all damage dealt by that weapon is non-lethal. Also, the Merciful Spell metamagic feat allows converting damaging spells that deal energy damage to non-lethal. They remain their original type for purposes of energy resistance, but gain the non-lethal trait.
So IMHO go nuts. Your build sounds fun... been there... now you get to ask the hard question. "What do we do with this unconscious guy?"
