I think this is the link you're looking for.

No, actually, it's right here.

Let me tell you a story....

The Sword play Cheap Sunglasses (by ZZ Top)

I've seen them play live a couple times, always a good show.

Giorgio Moroder does Nights in White Satin

Not sure why I like this... but I do

Spoiler:

I found out about a week ago that you can (more or less) sing the words of I'm a W*nker by Ivor Biggun to the tune of Nights in White Satin . This is the sort of thing that sends me into fits of ecstacy for days on end, which is perhaps why I belong in a secure institution.

I didn't want to like this, but, shiznit, it was pretty funny.

Bruce Springsteen's Bruce Springsteen was spot-on!

I work out!

Don't quote me boy, I ain't said s*~*.

'Kast does Trane

Cornershop do Norwegian Wood

A pretty straight version, except that it's sung in... Punjabi? Not sure...

This one is probably pushing beyond the limit of what constitutes a cover: Thea Gilmore sings Sandy Denny - London

A metal band covering "Sound of Silence"

This one should go into a new thread, good/great covers of bad songs.

I used to have an mp3 of that song from a different live session, where they kept being on the verge of corpsing every time they got to a "still believe" - resulting in much tittering from the audience.

The Dictator - Aladeen M++#+*@*!!*$

Speaking as someone with at least 20GB of nothing but rock, metal and alternative covers of all kinds of songs, it's hard for me to pick out absolute favourites. But some of them are:

Honestly, I could spend hours just writing a list, but those are the four that spring to mind as current favourites.

That said, I have to make mention of a few versions of Tainted Love, as it's one of the songs I just keep going back to:

This one is a favorite of mine, Electric Six - Radio Gaga. The video is really what sells it though.

Tori Amos covering Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit

Tori Amos covering Slayer's Raining Blood

Tori Amos covering Eminem's '97 Bonnie and Clyde

Tiamat covering the Rolling Stones' Sympathy for the Devil... I like this cover better than the original (blasphemy?).

Nevermore covering Simon and Garfunkel's Sound of Silence.

Opeth covering Deep Purple's Soldier of Fortune.

Ozzy Osbourne covering John Lennon's Working Class Hero

I wouldn't call the original a great song, but... Cookie Monster covering Carley Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe (Share it Maybe) always puts a smile on my face. :-)

Sandy does Bob

(Pretty sure I already posted this one, but whatevs, it's awesome)

Reminds me I've got to add that to my Netflix queue.

My vote goes to Muse - Feeling Good (by Nina Simone)

Also The Dandy Warhols - Hells Bells (AC/DC)

Gloria Jones (who was in the car when Marc Bolan died? Or something?)

Also, IIRC, the Soft Cell extended 12" single version of "Tainted Love" morphed into Where Did Our Love Go?

Aye, the original is by Gloria Jones. I actually much prefer the Soft Cell version of it, as I've never been much of a fan of Soul as a musical genre. I wouldn't say that I'm too young for it, as I enjoy a lot of older music, but more that it just wasn't something I ever had much exposure to it when my personal preferences for music were forming. Mostly I listen to metal, rock and alternative (obviously those are broad categories, I've got my favourite sub-genres within each of those), but I do have a fairly eclectic taste overall.

The one that I forgot to mention before was the cover that Orgy did of New Order's song Blue Monday. I love both versions, but I'm a big fan of industrial metal in particular.

EDIT: Also worth mentioning are the following three covers of The Chauffeur by Duran Duran. Great song, and some brilliant covers:

Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield covering Bowie

Did not know there was a video for Electric Six's cover. THANKS!!!

PS. Have to link to original Chauffeur NSFW...totally remember this video during my formative years. :)

Going to listen to the remakes now!

Sovereign Court

Sister Sin doing 24/7 Original By Accept

Another version of Nights in White Satin, this time by Deodato

Beats the original into a cocked hat (as worn by IceniQueen in the post above), mainly due to the wah-wah Moog solo about 3 minutes in. Some smashing guitar playing, too.

See also his famous (ish) version of Also Sprach Zarathustra

Also, don't know whether it counts as a cover or not, but Joe Bataan does The Lord's Prayer

Dark Archive

Bowies Space Oddity covered by Commander Chris Hadfield, on board the International Space Station.

The world's sexiest woman does:

The Clash
The Pixies
The Modern Lovers

I forgot about the Bad Plus.

Everybody Wants to Rule the World
Tom Sawyer
Heart of Gold
Smells Like Teen Spirit
Karma Police
Iron Man
Barracuda

The Lords, rockin' 'Greensleeves'

Device covering Trent. Im actually liking most of this cd. Theres enough change up from Disturbed that it qualifies as something new. I wonder what happened to the original band. Im going to have to look around and see if theres more side projects.

Mötörhead plays AC/DC's Highway to Hell.
Bonus: Iron Maiden's The Trooper; The Stones' Jumpin' Jack Flash; Perkins' Blue Suede Shoes; Ben E. King's Stand By Me; Chuck Berry's Let It Rock.

Festus Clamrod playing Charlie Daniels' The Devil Went Down to Georgia, complete with awesome claymation video!

But this metal remake is WAAAAAY better, with the same video.

Continuing the metal-remakes-of-pop-songs trend, here's Crowbar playing Dreamweaver. The 3rd comment (by xXxPobrecitoxXx) is the best!

whoa! love that one!

Heres one from the other thread.

Paul "Killer" DiAnno covering Children of the Revolution by Bolan.

Did a search, did not find.

The Ataris cover Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer'.

One line in particular sells it for me, as a cover and update combo.

"Out on the road today, I saw a Black Flag sticker on a Cadillac."

I have much love for deadheads, but this hit me right in the inexplicables.

Shearwater and Sharon Van Etten covering the old Tom Petty/Stevie Nicks classic "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around". It walks the fine line of being true to the original and a new take on a classic.

And another modern take on a classic male/female duet would be the cover of The Zombies' classic "She's Not There" by Nick Cave and Neko Case.

And going back to 1991, who can forget Too Much Joy's cover of the schmatzy 1974 Terry Jacks song "[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_q-iElPxBY]Seasons In The Sun[/url"?

Pedant alert!

"Seasons in the Sun" was originally Jacques Brel's not at all schmaltzy Le moribond

Also, "She's Not There" was not originally a duet.

Every song covered on the Camper Van Beethoven box-set Cigarettes and Carrot Juice: The Santa Cruz Years, but not any of the CVB covers except this traditional Spanish song that I can't find anything for:

Black Flag
Sonic Youth
The Pink Floyd (with another 8 minutes in the You Tube Mix column if you still need to comedown)
The Kinks
Country Joe and the Fish
Hank Williams
Ringo Starr

This is a fun cover of With or Without You:

With or Without You

Terrible Video, Great Song -- W.A.S.P. "I Don't Need No Doctor"

My favorite cover of this song, though is the classic one by Humble Pie --" I Don't Need No Doctor"

Liberty's Edge

Stevie Ray Vaughn covering Little Wing
GNR doing Knocking on heavens door
Sisters of Mercy doing Gimme shelter

I saw them with Gypsyhawk last fall. They did this at the end of the show.
