I am fine with you guys being creative and having lots of cool stuff, but please try to keep it reasonable and fitting to your character. If you do decide to get thing like flasks of acid and cold iron flails and barbed vests, please explain how you came to have them in your background. These sound more like the kinds of things you might find exploring dungeons rather than in the circus or the church or on a small farm...
These kinds of things are a little strange, but if you give a good story or explanation for them, I will consider allowing them. I would also like to stick to the core rulebook. Any special items I see fit to introduce will come in due time! Just try to stick to your character and his background. Have no fear, you will be adventuring soon, and I have a hunch that you will all find some nice things laying around...@Schmitty: You start speaking common and Halfling. You have a +2 Int. modifier, so you get to pick two other languages you can speak.
Acid flasks seem pretty standard rogue gear to me for getting through locks that you can't pick. His background includes travel. He picked them up somewhere along the way. If it's an issue Ill pick something else. No biggie.
The extra language is because of my rank in linguistics.
DM Darkthorne
@Schmitty: Ah, I see. In order. I was looking at the "Languages" section at the top of your profile. As for the acid, the mace, and the sunrods, let me point out your background:
"With nothing more than the clothes on his back and his trusty dagger (a gift from Rishmu) and a few silver, Schmitty headed into the city. He wandered all day wide eyed taking in the sights and sounds of a city that he had never experienced before. As night drew to a close Schmitty was looking for an inn to get a few hours sleep in."
If you would like to work into your background where you came upon these things, do so, I simply don't see them as things Schmitty would have in keeping with his background story. Also bear in mind that you will find treasure while adventuring.
@All: In case I have been unclear, the chest contains your equipment that was confiscated from you when you were taken into custody. Please try to keep things realistic and in keeping with your character and character background. For instance, it doesn't make much sense for any of you to have a starknife or an elven curved blade, even though you could buy them. Also note that there is a bin of torches in the corner for you to take.

Items I own that may be questionable
Dagger, Cold Iron and Dagger, Alchemical Silver: These are both daggers that I would use while crafting various herbal supplements either to keep the plants from harming normal metal daggers or keep certain metals from affecting the medicines. I took them with me when I left so I could continue to practice my craft.
Sickle: I normally use this to cut wild herbs and plants that I find to use in my concoctions.
Tinder twigs: something I used to help craft back home to assist with alchemical creations.
I will work these into my back ground as well I just wanted to state them up front for your approval.
DM Darkthorne
@Daemon: Yes, the daggers make sense for your character and his background, as do the tindertwigs. The sickle is not concerning to me... I would have allowed you to keep any poisons you could purchase, but if you don't have enough money or if you simply want to role-play having had them taken away from you, that is fine, too. A question about the daggers: are they made of cold iron and silver or are they treated with weapon blanches? This will affect price and damage, if you ever choose to attack with them.
@Arvind: I see why you might have a cold-iron flail, but please explain it in your background.
Daemon Son-of-none
The one dagger would be treated the alchemical silver the other would actually be cold iron, I used the prices that are listed under special materials in the Core Rulebook and included them with each weapon under my equipment section. They are not masterwork of course, just normal crafted daggers made of special materials
Arvind "The Hammer" Grunwald
@Arvind: I see why you might have a cold-iron flail, but please explain it in your background.
I will do that when I have time, briefly it involves a goblin cult of Hadregash, who had possessed an ancient and abandoned holy site, and had captured and enslaved a couple of acolytes traveling on their way to the temple. Arvind's father and Arvind were sent in search of the acolytes and rescued them. In the process the goblins had possession of the cold iron flail, which despite being too large for them, was considered a holy relic. Arvind's father sanctified the weapon of any evil taint, though none really existed, and it was passed to Arvind as a reward for his part in the rescue.
OK...I'll add it to the character...
Personally I've always like flails, every since I saw the film Ivanhoe as a child....sad but true.

Hey Guys, a warning for ya!
May 13th is my birthday, my wifes birthday (yes, same day) and our Wedding Anniversary. We are going to be going out of town for that weekend (13th, 14th, 15th) and I will be AWOL until the evening of the 15th. So during that time I will not be posting.
You guys can just NPC me for that weekend. I wanted to give ya like a weeks notice so you know whats going on :)
Thanks in advance :D

I see what you mean. OK. Edit mine to say dagger and Leather armor. I'll figure the rest out along the way.

@Schmitty: You certainly didn't have to give up everything! It would be fine if you wanted to keep the rest of your things, I was referring mainly to the sunrods and acid. If you want to have something like a bunch of daggers, simply work it into your background: Maybe you had a knife-throwing side act in the circus?
@Roger: Thanks for the heads up. Have fun, and Happy Birthday in advance!
@Avind: Sorry to disappoint, but you are not in Golarion...

I'm a halfling rogue who was part of a circus. Lockpicks and knives kinda come with the territory. Alright, Ditch the sunrods and acid and keep the rest.

Thanks. First time me and the wife actually have gone out of town on a vacation, so its rather exciting, even if its only for 3 days. I will be back on the 15th in the afternoon anyway.

Ditch the mace too. Didn't notice that earlier. I do want the quarter staff though. Call it a walking stick. I'll ,make a new list when time permits.
DM Darkthorne
@Arvind: The place is not Golarion, but the gods remain the same, as does time, environment, races, creatures, etc. Basically, this is Golarion with a different map, or if you prefer, it is an adjunct to Golarion, perhaps with the top of Kreonata extending into the wintry northern reaches of Golarion. However, do not be surprised if I add creatures and items of my own invention...
Arvind "The Hammer" Grunwald
@DMDT I got details of the god Hadregash from the book Gods and Magic, the Paizo Pathfinder book, and extrapolated to it being a goblin cult, as its a goblin god, (in the small god section).
Hadregash: Strongest and greatest of the barghest heroes, he was the first to organize goblins into tribes.
It says only a few goblins still worship these gods as now most follow Lamashtu.
Not sure if that's what you were getting at? Its one of those times where being in a group would be so much easier, to discuss these types of things.
DM Darkthorne
- Please label your rolls. You need attack and damage rolls consecutively to determine the effect of your attacks. Ex.)
DM Darkthorne's Attack: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
- You are not yet across the bridge, and therefore cannot make a five foot step to anywhere near the captain, or flank the rat. Sorry if this was unclear, I will get a battlemap as soon as possible. Until then I will describe everything to the best of my ability.
- Flanking does not give you a sneak attack, just +2 to hit. You do not get sneak damage unless the foe is not aware of your presence.
- Your AC and CMD are also listed on your profile. I can read them from there, you only need to know them, not post them. :)
- You have made no grapple check in the second round. Note that the rat has successfully grappled you (it's attack beat your CMD), and you have gained the grappled condition. Since you missed this, I will simply assign your third roll to your grapple check. This gives dominance of the grapple to the rat, and it will be able to act. Please review grappling rules on page 200 and 201.
Roger McCuen
Cousin Schmitty
I wasn't entirely sure of the setup, so I included the flanking stuff just in case. Please note the vast majority of my damage I'll come from sneak attack. If at all possible I will be making efforts to flank at every opportunity. Generally I'll be tumbling into place to avoid attacks of opportunity.
This is my first pbp combat. I'm open to feedback and Ill make every effort to get better.
Thanks.

Just some PBP combat tips for anyone who wants them...
- I will roll all initiative, and keep track of who has acted on their turn. Do not worry about posting order, I will be timekeeper and I will summarize and order what happens in each round.
- Please list the round number at the top of each post.
- Attacks require an attack roll and a damage roll. Please label these as such, including which weapon (if any) you are attacking with. For some weapons you use your dexterity modifier, others use your strength modifier.
- For combat maneuvers, such as grapple, disarm, charge, etc., use your CMB modifyer when attacking. To defend from these, your CMD is the equivalent of your AC.
- Later on, I will provide battlemaps. If you would like to move, please say where you want to go. Use your base speed, but don't forget modifiers from terrain, encumbrance, etc.
- Criticals require a second attack roll to confirm a hit. This only need beat the opponent's AC. Criticals will not double the damage of the first roll; they will have separate damage rolls. Special rules for criticals are not yet set in stone, but consecutive criticals will be rolling. This means that if a character continues to roll critical hits, they will continue rolling until they no longer have a critical. (See below)
- If you have any questions, concerns, comments, or simply want to chat, please post on this board.
Here is a nice format for an in-combat post:
___________________________________________________________________________
ROUND 1
DM Darkthorne springs into action, moving to attack the foe. Move to I9
Swinging his staff downward, it strikes true with a loud crack of wood on skull.
Sword: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Critical: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Critical: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Since I missed the third critical, this means that I dealt a total of 9 damage. You do not need to post this, it is just clarification.

They ran away in fear of the big horrible rat. Just sayin
Aid Another
In melee combat, you can help a friend attack or defend by distracting or interfering with an opponent. If you’re in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action. You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent’s next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack.
You can also use this standard action to help a friend in other ways, such as when he is affected by a spell, or to assist another character’s skill check.
Pg 197 of the Core Rulebook.

It is a very scary rat.....
......I think others may have got as confused as me, and thought we'd have to wait in order to post our actions...hopefully it will start to move forward when we all realize we can post out of order. As one of the last I was going to post after a few more had posted, but I've made the assumption that several of them will aid Smitty by attacking the rat.
DM Darkthorne
Apologies if the combat was or still is confusing. Also remember that in PBP, combat can sometimes be very slow because we need everyone to be posting for the round to move on. If things get really slow, and a character has not been heard from and we need to move on, I will take over.
@Voem: Please see the battlemap here.
@Kale: Is everything okay with you? I will control your character for now, but I will not do it indefinitely. Eventually, I may need to get rid of him if I don't hear from you.
