Merciful spell + Magical lineage trait

Magical lineage lets you pick a single spell that when you apply metamagic feats to it, the spell counts as 1 lower than it usually would. So if you pick fireball for example and use merciful spell on it, does your fireball turn into a 2nd lvl spell slot?

This has already been answered somewhere else on the boards, but rather than try to hunt it down, I can give you the simple answer.

No. You cannot end up with a negative level adjustment from a spell by applying a Metamagic Feat, even with this trait.

(The initial attempt to use this involved Merciful Spell and Magic Missile in order to have infinite Merciful Missiles as a 0-level spell)

ok np, though it makes more sense that it would not work with magic missile because there aren't 0 lvl spell slots anymore to cast it with.
