What defines the differences between Extraordinary, Supernatural, and Spell-Like abilities.

The Exchange

Check Appendix 1: Special Abilities on page 554 of the core book.

Be careful too. They're defined differently in different places, and some contradict. For example on P554 it says spell-like abilities can be counterspelled, on P221 it says they can't. I go with P221 since it's the more exhaustive description.

Grand Lodge

I believe the pg. 221 refers to CLASS PC spell-like abilities, and pg. 554 is referring to npc, animals, familiar, and monstous beast innate or natural spell-like abilities.

A spell-like ability is a spell-like ability. There isn't one set of rules for PCs and another set for everyone else. Everyone uses the same rules. One of the rules in this case is just wrong.

? My copy says on page 554:

Quote:
Spell-like abilities can be dispelled, but they cannot be counterspelled or used to counterspell

I would check the official Paizo PRD. Since that reflects the most recent printing, whatever the PRD says should be correct.

My guess is some folks just have an earlier printing of the Core Rule Book and that incorrect definition has since be fixed.

Every definition of spell-like abilities I could find in the PRD clearly says they cannot be used to counterspell, nor can they be counterspelled.

That SLA contradictio was fixed years ago.
Edit: I just realized this is a necro'd topic.

Oh good Lord, you're right wraithstrike!

I, unfortunately didn't notice that Apapalypse necro'd a thread from 2011!

Sigh ...

Heh. They should make all the poster avatars into zombies for necro'd threads. Like the 'smurf' gag (see image at left), but with a potentially useful side-effect of making it easier to realize when a thread has been brought back from the dead.
