My gnome cavalier and his mount

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

We're playing a gestalt game where we had to roll on a chart for everything- classes, races, alignment, even gender. Long story short, we all ended up evil, and i ended up as a Cavalier/Antipalidin gnome. Yeah, it was that or halfling, and i thought gnome was the more ridiculous option so i ran with it. How cool can my mount be, and what exactly is rules for trading up on a mount? At third lvl i'm using a wolf, but in the future i would like to gain a Worg, or even a medium dinosaur. Do i just train a new mount and then get to add the animal companion lvls retroactively? Is it totally at the Gm discretion? The wolf is fine for now, and i don't want to be accused of power gaming, but the rules aren't really clear about what to do if you want a mount with a higher starting CR. Any help would be hot.

The only official word that has come out of the big golem on the subject of a specific size mount is that no matter what your personal size is, your mount HAS to be of at least large size for balance reasons. This is a ruling specifically made for pathfinder society games so I guess it technically doesn't formally apply to the RAW of a typical home game but it does speak volumes in terms of the RAI for the game. Not that I think it matters since you are doing gestalt anyway, so that throws any semblance of balance or real legitimacy out the window anyway.

As far as getting a new mount, that is to be handled entirely by your GM and yourself.

Liberty's Edge

If you're a small race, dire bat all the way.

I am very interested in finding out the details of this - can you tell me where I can find the specifics of the discussion on the ruling and why it was made?

I'm getting ready to play my first Pathfinder campaign and I ended up needing to fill the fighter role. I prefer odd or outlandish characters so I chose a dwarven cavalier that rides a giant frilled lizard (from the bestiary). Fortunately my GM allowed me to use an unusual mount and due to the higher CR the mount slowly gains it's abilities as I level.

I would like it if Paizo had an official way to choose a mount other than a horse for RP reasons.

as far as I know officialyou can have any mount that can hold you. but there is no higher cr. your cavalier mount should be following the table like all the others. if the animalnyou picked doesn't have a listing then your dm should co opt or modify another mountborvwriteva new one.

but Pf animal companions/ mounts dontbhave slower advancement for higher cr bevause the mount stats never match the Beastiary ones.

The only thing I see for PFS is that it specifically states paladins can choose a medium mount if they are small. Where do you find something else?
