What's the deal with Barbarians?

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I remember stirrings that there were several core classes that were notably not as good as other classes, one of which being the barbarian. What was the deal and how would you go about fixing said deal?

APG fixed the Barbarian.

Did anyone else read this with Jerry Seinfeld's voice in their heads?

Guess I better read APG some more. I didn't really look over the barbarian section much yet.

The Rage Powers are awesome. Check out the Beast Totem line in particular, since it eventually (at 10th level) gives you the Pounce ability.

I just looked at barbarians (APG and Core) seriously for the first time last night as I converted a NPC over from a 3.5 module. There's definitely a lot of good options in the APG, and I can see how they'd feel underpowered in Core-only - It's not so much that they're weaker, as they didn't have the same depth in any one type of ability to match classes like the Fighter or Ranger that get stacking bonuses in whatever they're good with. But APG definitely helps with that.

NPC's tactics:
The NPC originally had a magic item that gave him a bite attack, and his tactic was "run up and grapple a spellcaster, then gnaw them to death." Now, I turned that magic item into an item that grants Animal Fury (Core) to barbarians , gave him Brutal Pugilist to negate the penalties for being in grapple (APG), and a bunch of anti-spellcaster rage abilities (Core & APG).
It wouldn't have been nearly as good without the APG.

I think of all the classes, the barbarian benefits most from the APG. Some of those rage powers are amazing, especially the Beast Totem powers. I made a Brutal Pugilist barbarian for a game and while I eventually switched to a wizard (3 melee characters, it was going to lead to competition and leaving somebody feeling unnecessary), he was great at tumbling through enemy lines and grappling the boss down while the other barbarian and cavalier wiped out the rest.

Sovereign Court

For a player character, the new Raging Vitality feat is the real winner for me. An extra HP per HD while raging, and a solution to the 'negative HP= Dead' problem of Barbarians (without the nasty endurance/diehard feat tax).

The new rage powers also really improve the class. I'm a huge fan of flesh wound :).

What's the deal with Barbarians? Where does all that rage come from? You'd think disemboweling orcs would be therapeutic, but it just seems to make them angrier! You disembowel more orcs, you go up in level, yadda yadda yadda - you rage even more! I really don't see the attraction. You'd think they could just have a beer and mellow out... but then drinking seems to set these guys off, too! You ever walk into a tavern with a barbarian and NOT have the evening end in a fight? Is there anything that WON'T set them off? It's like going into a frothing rage is their answer to everything!

Are the orcs invading? RAAAAGE! Evil wizard with a doomsday device? RAAAAGE! Parking Ticket? RAAAAGE!

"I'm sorry Mister Cohen, it's after eleven, we're no longer serving breakfast."

"RAAAAAAGE!"

Personally I don't think anyone with those kind of anger issues should be allowed anywhere near an axe.

I think seinfeld pretty much ran away with this thread from the start.

Am I the only one who thinks the class is misnamed?
Berserker fits better IMO.
A Barbarian (well in my mind anyway) is a variant on a race.
IE:
barbaric or wild
versus
civilized or urbanized

here is the classes real name

The Incredible Hulk

another pair of concepts you can sort of represent with a little tweaking

Beatrix Kiddo

Kenpachi Zaraki

a third concept that is harder to pull off without DM permission, fluff overhaul, and proper race/rage power selection

Ibuki Suika.

what the class poorly represents

Miyomoto Musashi.

what the class cannot represent whatsoever

Miyaka Yuki.

characters with maybe a splash of barbarian

Naruto Uzumaki

Porthos

Except that the Rage class ability isn't really very 'berserk' these days - you pretty much have precise control to turn it on and off, no chance to mindlessly attack your friends, etc.. All of which is good stuff, since it doesn't limit Barbarians to a single character stereotype, but represents a whole host of different concepts of 'physical power through inner strength'.

Rager is an apter name now, because the savage elements were stripped out and rage is the focus of the class. "Barbarian" no longer makes sense because the "barbarian" is...not a barbarian.

Conan the Rager?!?

BY CROM NO!!!

Thats really funny. I was talking to a friend about master chymist and how it is basically a spellcasting barbarian and how both can do Incredible Hulk. In the end, he was like "no they ain't. Barb doesn't go green."

OMG I did too hahaha.

I like barbarians, though their class name is kinda bla. But it's all good.

I very much see the Alchemist as Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde (or the Incredible Hulk one his more intelligent days).

Me too, I add "what are they so angry about, guess if I had to take all the hits i be pretty angry too"

or some other bad joke

No, you're thinking of Conan the Librarian.

Here I always thought Numeria was named for the number-crunching accountant barbarians that roamed the wild plains cataloging all that lay in their path...

Is this a UHF reference? If so, you good sir or maam, have indeed won the internet.

I never claimed a great deal of sanity. I blame all these years of pretending to be different people in various RPGs =P
