Weapon that bestows spellcasting

So how could one possibly go about creating (and pricing) a weapon that gave the user the ability to cast spells as a 2nd level sorcerer and made spellcraft a class skill for the wielder?

Minor artifact?

There is a shield that gives spells/casting of a 20th level pally IIRC. Look at that for a basis?

I didn't think artifacts were priced

Does the weapon actually bestow the Sorcerous class ability spellcasting, including the spells per day of a level 2 Sorc? Will it supply the character with Known spells as well? Will the weapon allow the user to gain extra spells per day from a high Charisma or will it only supply the normal number of spells per day for a 2nd level Sorceror? Will it allow the user to use Spell Completion magic items as a Sorcerer as well (IE Scrolls, Wands and Staffs)?

While the Intelligence/Wis/Cha crowns in the core rules give some precedent to supplying heretofore unknown skills, adding an entire spellcasting ability to a weapon is rather extreme, even if only 2nd level ability.

Frankly, your probably better off making it cast certain spells certain times a day and price the item that way. There really is no way in the rules to recreate the spellcasting class ability as an item and is probably not a precedent you want to set in your game.

I agree with you, which is why I'm asking. I'm afraid my DM may be playing favorites, in addition to setting a bad precedent, and I wanted to arrange some talking points before bringing the issue up with him.

look at the spell stitched template for a good baseline.

If your DM is amenable, ask about using the Leadership feat to get a ghost sorcerer cohort, whose bones/dust are housed inside the weapon's hilt. You'll eat a hefty level adjustment in order to end up with a weapon that manifests a ghost to cast spells for you as if it were a low-level sorcerer.

Given the +5 LA recommended in 3.5e, and the fact your cohort needs to be at least 2 levels lower than you are, you'd need to be 9th level and have the Leadership feat to end up with 2nd-level sorcerer spellcasting. Your pricing would be the feat + the cost of the weapon + the bones of an appropriate-level sorcerer + a Create Greater Undead spell.

Be advised that, while I would be immensely impressed with this sort of a request from a player, some DMs might instead be quick to ban something so far out of the ordinary.
