Who does what he is supposed to do. Sells both D&D and Pathfinder and refrains from commenting for or agsinst either edition and doing well. http://blackdiamondgames.blogspot.com/2011/03/selling-pathfinder-gts-presen tation.html . Now if only more store owners would follow his advice you would have less local gaming stores closing.

That is very true...actualy a store owner should not bad mouth any game he carries...but than again most gaming store are run by gamers who don't understand bussiness at all. The above is just one of the many symptoms of the actual problem relating to why so many gaming stores close down.

I saw the display and immediately thought it kind of a shame that they weren't able to nab a Rise of the Runelords set through their distributors. Otherwise, a beautiful display.
I think PF AP #1 is hard to come by these days, is it not? Maybe they just didn't want to show off an incomplete set. :P

I like the underlying principle, but the association that as a customer I'm purchasing weapons in a war is borderline insulting me.
I understand that we live in a capitalist world and that sometimes competition is fierce, but it ain't a war, and I'm no soldier for any publishing company. Similarly, calling myself a victim if the company I liked goes bankrupt is a long stretch, mostly based on self-pity.
That being said, I totally agree with the "don't unilaterally support one product; offer your customers diversity and options based on multiple proven products".

It is. A number of the adventures are no longer available through retail channels. A new copy of Burnt Offerings through Amazon.com's secondary sellers runs you $170-220.

I've worked on and off at the edges of the bicycle industry for over 15 years, and learned two things about retail:
1) Never bad-mouth ANYTHING!
That brand/shop/employee/whatever you said sucks? Next year it is going to be what keeps you in business. Also, if people think your the type who bad-mouths things, they assume you're probably bad-mouthing them behind their back.
2) Don't just go for a bigger slice of the pie, but try to create a bigger pie for all.
Ever wonder why companies like Boeing run ads on TV promoting air travel, even though customers have no clue what brand of plane they will fly when they buy their tickets? A bigger market is better for everyone.

Unless I ask for feedback I really do not want to hear soneone criticize or comment on my purchase. Espcially the store owner. It tends to remove any interest I had in the product. When I do ask for information I tend to want nore than "buy this product! It's the greatest thing since sliced bread! type of sales pitch. I want to know both the good and bad parts of an rpg. If your unable or not professional enough to put your dislike of an rpg aside to gine me a good description of both I take my money elsewhere.

Very smart.
In the world of retail, the Edition War is checked at the door. :) 4e may be badly done, and Paizo may have been blessed by jumping ship; but no store owner has the right to sell his loyalty and stay in business for a long time.

That is very true...actualy a store owner should not bad mouth any game he carries...
Exactly. Really bad idea...
but than again most gaming store are run by gamers who don't understand bussiness at all.
Anyway, just as much as the shop owner and clerk must realise that he can't be a gamer when it comes to bad feelings towards a game, he must realise that the customers are gamers. With all the good and bad that comes with it.
And one of the things that comes with that is that if you take a stance in the edition war, you'll become an enemy to many of them. Even if they themselves might not be active in the wars, they will probably take it personally when you call their favourite game names.
And that means they will no longer come to your shop. For anything. Why support some tosser who calls your favourite game crap? Amazon doesn't do that, and their prices are usually better. As is their selection. Many will support those quaint, old-fashioned retail stores because they offer something the online stores can't. But when that something is condescension, the choice becomes really, really easy.
The above is just one of the many symptoms of the actual problem relating to why so many gaming stores close down.
Exactly. Bad economy or not, stiff competition by online stores or not, ineptitude will fail.

Taking things too literally maybe? It was a metaphor. He managed to both use one of these and refer to something that is a reality in the whole D&D/Pathfinder discussion.
I'd say he killed both birds with one stone, but then you'd sic PETA on him! ;-P

Could someone please get this memo to Millennium Games in Rochester NY?
I go in there to impulse buy all the time and I only leave with new products on about 10% of visits. They have the CRB, GMG, Bv1, Bv2... that's all well and good. But I own them. I am way more apt to buy a chronicles book.
They're actually carrying more Pathfinder products now than before they moved, and better placed. But they're not going to carry full lines of either Pathfinder OR D&D at this point because those are now a really small part of their business (compared to box games like Ticket To Ride, CCGs, mini battle games like Warhammer, and the computer gaming rooms).
About the best you could hope for is a dedicated spinny rack in addition to the Pathfinder shelf.

Black Diamond Games is my Lodge and I'm very proud to call it my base of operations for Society play in the Bay Area! Gary is a pioneer in the retail game, thriving while other stores close shop. Paizo recognizes him for this an set him up at GAMA to teach other retailers his philosophies and techniques.
"Be an arms dealer, not a cheer-leader!"
@Scott Betts: The RotRL set was purchased recently...
@Laurefindel: There are many real things in life to be insulted by, this isn't one. I recommend you get the 'Thick Skin' feat next time you level.
+++++
I preferred Beta-Max, but VHS won.
I chose the Sega Saturn and the Sony Playstation kicked its ass.
HD-DVD over BluRay. Sh!t, I lost another one!
It is a good feeling to finally pick the winning side!
Good thing Sony doesn't make RPGs.

Oh don't worry about my blood pressure, I'm actually a quite relaxed person.
But I'm also a pacifist (I know, a rare sight in this hobby) and I find this mania that people have to see wars everywhere and treating everyone a soldiers in one camp or another a huge step backwards, socially speaking.
I guess I was more disappointed than anything, thinking "at last someone got finally got rid of this stupid "edition are at war" thing but, no, never mind..."

Really? I could have sworn I saw more before the move.
Maybe good sales and bad timing are conspiring to give me the wrong impression.
