I always slit the ear, put the ring in, and stitch it back up like a permanent earring. This requires a decent heal check and a very high handle animal check (+4 for being a companion), however.
[Edit] This assumes the companion has an ear. Unlike snakes, lizards, or birds. Birds could have it on as a ring. Pawed or hoofed animals get the above ear treatment.

You can go with the ridiculous 3.5 picture of the aboleth wearing rings on its tentacles and a cape on its tail and assume that all magic items magically resize and fit on creatures somewhere, even if it looks absurd.
Of course were a human to try to put on aboleth ceremonial slime duct covers they'd probably turn into pasties and look equally silly.
