Crafting Special materials

Is the cost of crafting an item out of special materials counted in the formula for the time it takes to make that item?

Ex. I want to craft a masterwork mitheral tower shield, a normal masterwork tower shield would cost 180 gp, or 1800 sp. My craft skill is 15, and assuming i take 10 on the check, it would give me a result of (with a +10 DC to speed it along)

24 x 25 = 600

so after 3 days, i would finish crafting it by achieving the 1800.

if i add mitheral into it, that's another 1,000 gp, making the price 1,180, and the number i need to fill, a hefty 11,800

11,800/600 = Almost 20 days of work.

That seems like a lot, and pretty impractical for a character to create their own nifty armor when there's adventuring to be done. Doing it while adventuring would extend that by x4, about 80 days. by the time you would finish crafting it, you may need better armor than that.

So seeing as this seems kinda impractical, do you add the cost of special materials in? at that rate, heavy adamantine armor would take something like 250 days, a very long time. Is all that math correct?

Thanks,

That check is per WEEK worth of work, not day, per day is calculated in cp, not sp. No it doesn't make much sense, but none of the crafting rules do. There is a pdf called "Making Craft Work" or something like that, which is a lot better than RAW, but still doesn't make perfect sense, as in, crafting a set of full plate in 8 days instead of 1 year is better, but still isn't perfect.

Seriously?

FML

How is the craft skill supposed to be used again? Can you link me to that pdf?

Making Craft Work

Can be bought from this site for a massive $0.99 :)

I see. Is there a free version?

I don't know but I think it's a good alternative set of rules for crafting.

I modified it a bit for my own campaign but it's definatly worth the 99 Cents.

I'm sure you're right, though i won't be buying it. Perhaps excluding special materials considerations and turning weeks to days would work better.

Go with your gut. Crafting as a "pure" system just isn't going to work since it is based on cost as opposed to other "real world" factors. (real world factors are things like supply and demand - take a look at wine - you can pay 5 bucks or 5000 bucks for essentially the same amount of fermented grape juice... and I'm not even talking about wine that has been aged - just wine that has the potential for it - which isn't just in the hands of the "craftsman")

It's fantasy, and it's supposed to be fun - so don't let rules get in the way of fun. (I think rule #1 is to have fun anyway)

If it makes sense that it takes a week to craft a shield, then that is how long it takes. Just keep it relative so that it makes sense to your players and to yourself. If it take a day to make a dagger, it shouldn't take a day to make a sword. Take a look at the various spears there are. The price difference ranges from 1gp to 5gp - when the only essential difference is the size of the stick.

Don't let the "real world" get in the way - it's a game, and rules won't be perfect - otherwise it wouldn't be a game - it would be a simulation.

I think I'll just have to recommend that to my GM, thanks.
