Pronunciation Guide

Lost Omens Campaign Setting General Discussion

I don't know if this has been addressed elsewhere and if so could someone kindly redirect me. Is there anywhere a pronunciation guide for the creatures and locations in the Pathfinder universe? I'm using the Lords of Chaos and the names are giving my group fits. For that matter some of the locations are perplexing. Thanks everybody.

This would be a completely awesome blog post.

There was a pronuncuiation guide in the old campaign setting, I've yet to comb through the new version to see if it survived, but I wouldn't have expected it to have gone.

Still some help on demon names and gods ect would be helpful.

We actually cut the pronunciation guide from the Inner Sea World Guide because, as useful as that might be to a subset of gamer who prides themselves on proper pronunciation, we had better uses for those pages.

How about this, though... as the writer of Lords of Chaos, if there's any demon names that are particularly vexing, post them here and I'll post pronunciations.

Better still, I don't suppose there's any chance of you recording and posting a reading of the cut pronunciation guide out loud? I remember they did that for Planescape back in the day and it helped much more than a written list in faux-phonics. Up until that point I had no idea how to pronounce Baatezu.

I know you're busy, but at least with an audio recording there's no issue with spell-checking or layout :)

Much more complicated. And thus much less likely for me to do.

Seems like a reasonable subject for a Golarion Blog post someday though.

I'll probably have time in the next couple of days to, with official permission, record the official pronunciations out of the old Campaign Setting and make the link accessible here along with a short copy of the "faux-phonics." Any idea of a place where that would be easiest to post, or the easiest format to put something like that in through GoogleDocs?

This is the great thing about Paizo, you ask a question and people are willing to help out. Mr. Jacobs just two for you from Lords of chaos,
1. kostchtchie
2.andicifkhu
and one to settle an argument how exactly do you pronounce Golarion?
Thank you.

Kostchtchie: KOS-tch-chai (this one's a toughie... I kinda switch how I say it now and then, even)

Andirifkhu: ann-di-RIFF-koo

Golarion: go-LAIR-ee-un

The pronunciation guide is dead! Now they won't pronounce my name the wrong way anymore!

Trelmarixian = Trel-mar-EESH-an

;)

(and yes, it's some mortal's fault for not providing a pronunciation guide of his own to his editors when he created me)

Holy crap. I've been mispronouncing this the entire time.

Dark Archive

Don't feel bad my whole group was wrong not one of the five of us had it right.
Thank you for the quick answer Mr. Jacobs.

Interesting. I've always thought the pronunciation of Golarion was fairly obvious. How were other people pronouncing it?

Shadow Lodge

Go-lah-ree-on was how I started pronouncing it, actually.

Dark Archive

We were calling it Go-lah-rye-on or Go-lar-e-on depending on which side of the argument you were on.

FYI: Note that the PathfinderWiki lists all the pronunciations from the original Campaign Setting in their individual entries; this includes most of the major demon lords.

"The right way" is the way you and your group agree to say it.

Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise :)
