Confused about equipment usability

Hi there,

Well, I want to clear a doubt I have about what types of creatures can use what types of equipment.

for example, in Monstrous Humanoid description, it says that any monstrous humanoid described as not using armor, is not profficient with any armor.

would picking up a class level (if the monster in question is elegible for that class) that grant armor profficiency, override that limitation?

You are correct. As far as I know it just means that the creature is not inherently proficient, the elf could be an example how it has racial proficiencies.
