Unusual grappling

Rules Questions

Let say a wyvern (large) hit a gnome (small) with his bite and win the grapple check.

If the wyvern then decides to get away with it would it be really limited to half speed?
(since the gnome is in the beak and the wyvern's wings are totally free to flap!)

And then once again both should have the grappled condition as per the rule but to me it sounds ridiculous! Aside from using her beak i can't see why the wyvern should be restricted in away to do other things like dodging a fireball or even dancing in sing of victory!

In my opinion the grapple rule are desinged more for conventionnal fight in mind, i mean creatures more or less humanoids trying to immobilise/restrain one another. For more unusual cituation like in my exemple i found the rules are really laking precision and given to personnal interpretation.

Your 2 cents please!

Don't Wyverns have the feat Snatch, which allows them to do more or less exactly what you are talking about? Check the Monster Feats section of the Bestiary.

Unless there is an update to the bestiary that i'm not aware of "snatch" is not listed under the wyvern selection of feat.

The Exchange

The 'Grab (Ex)' listing in the Universal Monster Rules (Bestiary page 301) covers it - a creature with that particular trait can elect to 'hold' instead of 'grapple' a target, not get the 'grappled' condition themselves, but takes a -20 CMB to make and maintain that version of a grapple.

Seems like ill have to revisit the rulebook before next week end game.

Going by the thread title, I thought there would be pictures...

Also, normally you have to maintain the grapple to get the ability to also do a half move, and normally moving less than half provokes a fly check or loose 10 feet of altitude --- so if the little squirmy halfling is too much to handle, the wyvern may have to drop him (release the grapple as a free action) to stay airborn. Which the halfling may stop wanting to try depending how high they get...

Which can make for a VERY dramatic scene!
