A 1st level bard can use his performance to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to perceive the bard’s performance. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. [...] Inspire courage is a mind-affecting ability. Inspire courage can use audible or visual components. The bard must choose which component to use when starting his performance.
I have some questions about this bardic performance:
1) Does the bard need skill points in the selected performance?2) A bard who choose to inspire courage through its dance, who can actually "inspire"? Melee characters do have the time to "perceive" the bard performance while fighting??
3) If the same dancing bard has also "silence" casted on herself, would the spell influence somehow the performance?
Thanks ;)

1) No because a bard can use perform untrained.
2) As long as the character has line of sight to the bard as defined under the combat rules then they can benefit from the performance.
3) If the performance is using audio components then it will be affected, yes.

Question 4:
Could you use "Perform (Fight)" to use some form of Kung-Fu style while fighting, thus inspiring your enemies?(Probably not very useful, but i'm wondering :) )
As you don't need to actually make a perform roll for the inspire courage, you could without any problem.
You could also use it as flavor for Perform (dancing), where your performance is beautiful ku fu or swordsmanship.

If he is using visual components (possible for inspire courage) then silence have no effect.
Being blinded gives him a 50 % chance of failure if using visual components.| Liko87 |

That's good!
It makes possible for a bard being a very powerful anti-wizard in the party.. :o

I have a bard character who usually uses Perform(stage fighting) in a Council of Thieves campaign. He has a masterwork rapier that he uses to demonstrate superior swordsmanship to his allies. The sword has never actually touched an enemy.

Just to be clear, if you are using dance to inspire courage it still works fine in a silence as long as those you are inspiring can see you. Also Bardic Performance works in anti-magic zones as well!
How about this:
Could you inspire courage via a message spell? You cast it, they run around the corner, and you start whispering your bardic encouragements in their ear.

Sadly not. Bardic Performances are all either supernatural or spell-like abilities, which don't function in antimagic areas

That should be possible. Although I guess you could shout loud enough to use bardic performances anyways, but it does give some less noisy uses of the ability.

My mistake!

The message spell is great for a 0 level spell.
10 minutes a level/1 creature a level. 100 ft + 10 ft a level. My bard is 7th level, so his whisper can affect the whole party for more than an hour, be heard 170 ft away, around corners inside buildings. Pretty strong for 0 level.
And if it can deliver bard song as well, it's even better!
