As I've mentioned, we live in a very small house for 4 people in the U.S.: The living area is a living room, dining room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, hallway, and bathroom, or just under 1200 square feet (~110 square meters), so 300 square feet per person. "Typical" Americans prefer 400-750 square feet per person.
GothBard loves art. Every open wall in every room is covered with either cabinets or art. If I wanted to hang even a 16"x24" poster I'd need to move some other piece of art. "Put it in storage" you say? I already have 40-50 framed pieces of art in the studio loft, most of which have suffered significant damage from being moved over and over and over again, yet never hung.
So whenever GothBard purchases new art, I get enraged. I demand that she throw out at least two old damaged pieces of art so I have somewhere to store the new art. And she doesn't. And the new rolled-up art gets thrown into storage, never to be seen again until we move the art again and discover it's been ruined.
It's not so much the money -- I doubt we paid over $2000 total for everything in our "collection". It's that we don't have space for the art we have, GothBard insists we can't ever throw any of it out, and she continues to buy more.
If I had even a speck of open wall space, heck, I'd love my own poster or picture. But every wall is already covered. I don't want any more.

But still...
The Bay Area Air Quality Management Board (the people who warn us about smoke and pollution, and who do a great job of being effective, yet polite and low-key) announced last week, "OK, we know that it's been cold and there's a major storm front moving through the area over Christmas, but that's the problem. The air isn't going to be moving much at all, so whatever you do, however you plan to celebrate Christmas, please don't have a fire. It's the only thing we're asking."
So of course last night the neighborhood smelled of smoke. This morning in the pouring rain the smoke was thick enough to make my throat hurt. By 12:30 pm it mixed with the smell of burning plastic (the modern part-mylar wrapping paper burning) that we can no longer go outside.
And I think to myself, "YOU chose to move to a densely-populated area, with over 2200 people per square mile. And you can't be bothered to pay any attention to the general health advisories that politely ask you to not do something so as not to negatively impact your neighbors' health.
Please leave."

Watching review of Far Cry 6 wasn't the best idea... Now I want to play it, but it still isn't available for purchase on Humble Bundle/Steam, and it might be ages before it will be available on either, and at a price I will be able to afford.
I also watched some very critical Assassin's Creed: Valhalla reviews (it is on sale on Humble Bundle now and I am seriously considering getting it next year)... Those reviews make wonder if it would be worth it's current half price. Should I wait until another, bigger, sale instead?
I haven't finished Odyssey yet anyway, especially that I have just bought expansions expansions-unlocking season pass.

Also I am eating black cake as we speak.
I love black cake!
One of WW's beat friends, Not Luke Skywalker, and his wife, Leah-not-Leia, had it for their wedding cake as well as their daughter's baptism.

Kids are finally asleep, living room is clean, cardboard and paper recycling all out in the bin, and after WW finishes "fixing" Miz Daisy's computer ("Firefox keeps crashing on me when I try to open my gmail!"), we're going to tidy up the kitchen and maybe watch an episode of something before we become unconscious.
Val was so tired, he fell asleep while WW was reading aloud to them tonight. They get harder to carry to bed and put in an upper bunk when they weigh sixty pounds.
Unless you're Captain Yesterday. Then you can do it one-handed in the snow while operating a flamethrower with your other hand.

How I wish I could say that the following story is the first time I've seen this, but I can't. It is the first time I've had this happen with this particular coworker, but I've danced this dance with many others in the past.
*I come up to desk to start my shift*
Coworker: "Hey, just so you know, I opened the window back here because it's so f#%%ing hot. It isn't really helping though."
*coworker leaves*
*I feel cold air coming in through the window, and simultaneously feel hot air coming from heater underneath window. Window is wide open, heater is set to 80F with fan on high*
Me: "Why do people do this?"
*close window, set heater to 70F, set fan to auto*
Already it feels better back here, and it's been less than 30 minutes.

To be honest I wouldn't know where to find our air advisories either.
And don't say "From the local news" because I personally haven't watched a local news program in years so I wouldn't expect my neighbors to.
I'm not saying you're wrong just that you might be expecting to much from your neighbors.

You know the Iliad? By Homer? It's called that because Ilium was another name for Troy, and the suffix "-ad" meant "story of". Therefore,
The Iliad
could also be called
Troy Story.
I read this post aloud as we were getting in the car to go over to WW's dad and stepmom's house yesterday, and we spent the whole drive discussing casting the Troy Story movie.
Buzz Lightyear is AchillesWoody is Odyssey, because he is always the one coming up with a plan
BoPeep is Helen
TRex is Mentor
The Old Prospector is Priam
Jessie is Cassandra
We didn't get any further than that because it's a short drive and we were giggling too much and the kids kept asking questions.

I have to admit, I don't understand most of that. I only saw the first movie, once, and wasn't really paying attention to it very much. But I'm glad you enjoyed the joke.

We had a pretty good Christmas. Got to open presents and everything then Crookshanks and I dropped off a present for Grampa Yesterday and drove to Omaha to pick up my nephews and freak out some ultra conservative norms (Crookshanks with her head shaved on the sides and dyed florescent green, me a friendly and approachable hippie) then we drove back and got home at midnight.

Fantasy NPC: Lady Illivaretha, The Unwanted Concubine
This sounds like the plot of a Hallmark movie.
Is the younger brother ace or gay, or just viewing her as a good friend in from out of town?

If the Hallmark movie included a ruthless aristocratic conspiracy bent on overthrowing the current king, possible death to deliberate poisoning, duels, riding AND hunting accidents, and lot of scheming, then yes.

My intent for him is to be aromantic asexual.

It's really terrifying how insidious and invisible inflation can be.
I'm old. I lived through the 1970s, so I saw double-digit inflation at work. I still remember $0.10 candy bars going to $0.15, then $0.25, all within a year or so, then up to $0.50 a handful of years later.
But since the 1970s, I really haven't noticed inflation... until I started entering all my budget data going back to grad school into Quicken.
As you recall, my overall grocery/food/clothing/anything budget for 2021 was $100/day for a family of 4. Call it $3000/month.
In 1993, that same budget was $220/month for a family of 2.
I remember my expenses tripling when I moved from Davis back to Albany, so that would take it to $660/month, then double the family to $1320/month.
$1320 in 1993 dollars is $2539.05 in 2021 dollars.
In short, going from a "poor" grad student making all of $12,000/year in the 1990s to being a tech worker making over ten times that now, my overall budget has hardly changed at all once you factor in inflation and Bay Area living costs.
That's pretty stunning.

I think it's more of a Caribbean thing than it is West African - spirits aren't really part of the culture, so far as I know.

Reward systems don't work for me. For instance, I can't be like "If I clean the bathroom, I can have some cookies", because my brain says "Or...you could just have cookies instead of cleaning the bathroom", and I cannot argue with that logic.
Also, self-imposed deadlines don't work because I know the guy who sets them, and he is a dumbass.

Anyone that can't build a fire so it does not smoke bomb the neighborhood should never be allow to have bonfires. It is not really that hard, you know, for those who have a decent working knowledge of how fire works, what good dry wood is, and how to you know, put them together. What can I say, I take fierce pride in building nearly smokeless fires in all sorts of challenging environments and weather. Rather useful for a person who loves to camp, druid powers baby!

Today's vacation projects: sew eye patches onto the orca I've been knitting for my niece's birthday next week, so I can get her package in the mail, do a bit of laundry, and contemplate finally completing the Fourth Doctor boots I started painting three and a half years ago.
I found a fabulous pair of boots at a thrift shop for ten dollars, and decided to use the BBC's official Fourth Doctor scarf knitting pattern to paint them, converting I think every six rows of stitching into one vertical inch of paint. I got about 80% if it done, and then the big move happened, and I never got back to it.
