Finished reading Act 1 of A Raisin in the Sun with kiddos. Asked them to write a short response of what the family should do with the money and how that would solve their problems.
I lost track of how many kids used some variation of "[character] is a grown adult and needs to act like it" in their responses.

Er, not everyone has an 800+ credit rating and can take out money at the drop of a hat, moron! SOME people need proof of income to get any loans at all!
Tirade over.

I have always found it interesting that black entrepreneurship is always looked upon negatively in(and perhaps via) that work, especially with an eye towards black owned businesses.

In that sense, it's actually interesting - at the start of the play, the class was really split on whether or not Mama should let him invest. Most of the boys were really siding with him. Then they learned
So their reaction was less about "black entrepreneurship = bad" and more that it looked to them like the character was placing a very risky dream over the guaranteed security of a house for their family.
And given Mama's speech at the end of the play about there always being something to love, I think that was more Hansbury's intent: family > ambition.

I love teaching this play because I can watch their opinions shift so much over the course of the play. Kids who were gung-ho for the liquor store suddenly change their mind as they get new information - what would their choice be if that happened to them? And I make them actually discuss it.
I'm in a heavily religious and conservative town, so this play is excellent for examining choices and motivations - that act 1 reveal always gets a visceral reaction. So I make them frame it as why is the character making that choice? What circumstances would bring them to that point, and therefore how can it be fixed? Every character's thought process is made clear, so even if you hate the decision they make, you can see exactly why they thought it was the thing to do at that moment.

Apparently Homunculus #1's class is learning about the Protestant Reformation, because he had an interesting assignment last night: Given six of Martin Luther's 95 theses, write them as tweets.
I don't think I've ever had so much fun with homework, and I don't even know how to tweet! Sometimes I love being a (step-)dad. :)

Way of the wicked is also an evil AP. Pretty good reviews I've heard. And yes character motivation is also a thing with non good characters.
There was once I was called out by the GM for being not heroic enough. Because the character in question was a drunken sot(CN) , so after he rescued the merchant from cannibals, he declared that it was a moment worth celebrating(psst, he's just looking for an excuse to drink), then asked the merchant which bottle he should open for the occasion. When the merchant complained it was robbery, he helped himself to a bottle at random.
His POV:Come on, I rescued you from being eaten, so I do deserve a reward, right?
Giving him the cheapest wine would also have sufficed.

So almost everyone in my L5R game either has the "Hero of the People" advantage, or otherwise is peasant-friendly, despite the lore of the area being that such an attitude is, at best, unusual, and most often perceived as weird as hell by your average samurai. They know this, and they like that quirk (they didn't even decide it as a group, just 4/5 of them happened to put that in their backstories and such).
The one character who doesn't is a Crab Clan bushi. This is what I said in regard to that:
To be fair, you're in the only clan that regularly recruits new Samurai through trial - so from your opinion, "if you want it so bad, get your ass on the other side of the wall and kill some goblins" is a natural thought pattern.
(Though 90% of the time they only allow Ronin to do this, and only during "20 Goblin Winters")
But I'm feeling that the Crab Clan, if presented with enough Shadowland creature deaths, would acquiesce to a request for nobility in the face (pun intended) of enough heads.
"You killed 37 goblins? Yep. You're a samurai. No, you must've been an illegitimate bastard of some samurai we never heard of. No, your mom was a whore. Accept it. You're in the Hida family now."

Y'know, it's funny. I sound optimistic because I typically say, "Most people you meet are fundamentally good. If you treat them fairly and well, they will treat you fairly and well."
But I also say, "And the moment you get 5 or more people in a room, they become the most evil abomination imaginable, with no atrocity too vile for them."
So yeah, a little less optimistic.
Today's lesson in the abject vileness of humanity?
Remember that $135 felt hat at the Dickens Faire? I never mentioned it after ridiculing the price, but Impus Major bought one. And it looks really good on him.
So he was changing in the bathroom at school, put his hat at the top of the stall, and forgot it in his rush to get to choir. He remembered it a few minutes later, rushed back to the bathroom, and someone had, of course, thrown it in the toilet, then used the toilet (#1, fortunately), then flushed.
We are trying to rescue it, but WTF? Was the Lost and Found really that hard?

In terms of RP, I'm really looking forward to when Shiro finally gives me permission to post Trig's journal here. (He plans on getting his AP published, so I don't get to talk about it until he's done.)
But having 209 distinct items in your Handy Haversack alone (closer to 300 if you count duplicates) is just TOO fun.
GothBard put it very well.
NobodysHome: Just so's you know, Trig couldn't afford to replace that potion of Water Breathing Llew used, so unless Llew asks about it Trig isn't going to replace it until next time and we'll have to go without.
GothBard: Are you kidding? Llew just assumes that that thing Trig wears on her back is just some kind of magical gnome bag and whatever she wants just pops out of it, because that's Llew's experience with it.
The best moment of the campaign so far: She loaned her bag to the sorcerer, and there is no love lost between those two. She told him the magic word to get alchemist's fire out of the bag was "Boomy!"
So he was greedy and he told the bag to give him "Candy!"
And promptly ate the vomit capsule that came out and was out of the fight for a round.
We ruled that Trig was also out for a round because she was laughing too hard to help anyone.

"In the card game I made, you can't divide by two."
Me: What do you mean you can't divide by two?
"Like if something tells you to draw an odd number of cards and divide by two, you can't."
Me: So if something tells me to divide my draw of seven cards by two, I draw seven; but if I'm told to divide a draw of six by two, I draw three?
"Yeah."

I just read (I'd link but it was on a different device) there's an arctic blast coming Tuesday that is supposed to drop Midwest temperatures 30 degrees F lower than usual for this time of year.
I might've picked the wrong year to leave Florida.
Thankfully, my part of Ohio is damn-near on the West Virginia border, and in the Valley, so it hasn't been outrageous, but...s$#~...the article said this could be a record breaking cold, and that it will most certainly be the coldest of the year.

Being friendly doesn't enter in to it.Does that mean I can't step into your hotel?
Nope.

My dog has been doing this weird thing for the past few weeks:
He walks up to you when you're sitting somewhere, and just kinda rests his dick on your knee, or if you're in a recliner, on your foot, or whatever. At least once a day I have to push him away. Sometimes he'll walk over to my girlfriend's dog, who's lying down, and either sit on him (like do the sit position, but resting his ass on the other dog's back) or straddle him so his johnson is resting on the other dog's head.
He's a neutered 9-month old (I have a big puppers), so I don't think it's a sexual thing, and he's not really a dominant type, so I wonder...is his junk just cold?
It's really, really weird...

Have I mentioned how much I love Impus Major?
One of his friends sent out a party invite to around 20 people.
Of course, people had to "Reply All" to RSVP, so everyone's inbox is spammed with stupid, "Yes, I am coming," messages.
So he replied:
"As will I, and I will also reply to all, as that seems to be the hip, new thing to do when telling a host that one will show up to their party."

Got a new laptop today. Didn't really want to or intend to, but when I went to boot my old one it wouldn't start. Couldn't even boot from a USB drive. So, off to the store I went. And now I'm working on setting everything up. Whee.
Good luck setting up your new laptop. Vacation tomorrow!

Meanwhile, in Canada we have been having an epidemic of people getting stuck in donation bins and dying. Apparently, since 2015 eight people have died this way. It's sad, because most of these people are the kind of people who are given the clothing inside. The bins were designed to prevent theft. Really, if you are trying to steal a coat from a donation bin, you're probably the kind of person who needs such an item, not a Kramer wanna be who's selling vintage ski jackets on ebay. Just let them steal the damned things. It's not worth anyone dying over.

Taking a road trip today.
** spoiler omitted **
I'm sorry Freehold. It's been almost 20 years since I lost my dad, and from what I experienced, you never stop wishing he was still around.
It does gets easier to deal with.
But you never forget. You never stop missing them. To this day I still have dreams with him in it, and after a while in them I ask "Hey, wait, didn't you die?" and almost always instantly wake up at that point.
If you need someone to talk to, I'm there for you. If you believe in prayers, you have mine. If you care for hope, it's all yours. If there's anything I can do, don't hesitate to ask.
