Legal PDF manipulation

Technology

First off I'd like to categorically state what the title strongly implies. I'm looking to do this legally, I'm not trying to hack Paizo PDFs.

Now, onto the point. I recently purchased the map pack PDF for CotCT and I wanted to modify the maps a little. I've read in previous threads where people were able to take text off of the PDFs, leaving just a player friendly version of the map. I remember something about the different versions of Adobe Acrobat Pro complicating this, and I'm guessing this is my problem. The version of AAPro I have access to is 9. Is there no way to use 9 to do what I'm looking to do?

I do this all the time to get my images for MapTool.

You want version 8. If it can be done in 9, I'm not aware how. The good news is, you only need the reader, not the pro version. You can find old versions online for free.

Good luck!

If you use Acrobat 8.something, you should be able to use the select tool to extract the image. This capability was removed in Acrobat 9.

Be sure to use the Select Tool* and not Snapshot. Snapshot only takes a screen capture of the outlined area. Select Tool pulls the native image directly out of the PDF.

*I haven't done with a map folio in a while, so my apologies if something has changed such that this doesn't work anymore.

As far as legality, I can't make an "official" ruling for you, but my interactions with the Paizo staff strongly suggest that using PDF images for your own games is totally legal if you purchase the PDF and you are not distributing the art.

Don't use anything on a website or anywhere else that people can access it, just like you wouldn't post your PDF online, and you should be fine.

As the others have said use Acrobat Reader 8, however, be careful with this on a internet connected system due to security reasons. Or, you could use SomePDF Image Extractor to do the same thing.

Click on my profile and download the PDF extractor. This program splits the images out form the PDF as JPGs it takes all images of the page, and every layer combination, so you should get a copy with the words, and one without

They are still Patching Acrobat Reader 8.

I am not sure of this, But I think if you Own Acrobat 9 Pro it works to.

Has anyone tried the just released Acrobat Reader 10 yet?

My initial test of Adobe reader 10 seems to show they added back the ability to select pictures, which they took out of 9.

Yay!!

Thanks for all the advice people.

Glad to hear they're putting the ability back in ten...and very glad I didn't pick up 9 last semester. *off to go see if the reader of 8 will fit on my laptop*

Yes—Adobe Reader 8, 9, and X are all still supported with security updates, and they can all be downloaded from Adobe here.

I'm happy your testing went so well, Dragnmoon!

Vic, I'd like to thank everyone at Paizo for their support of the Portable Document Format, and you directly as Technical Director.

You Paizo folks never fail to amaze, surprise, and please me with your content. Your organization's ability to please its customer base, while riding the wave of transient technology requirements, is a testament to folks doing what they love and getting paid for it.

I'll be a customer until my expiry-date hits, or a new version of me is issued.
