Dimensional Lock and Resurrection

Rules Questions

Oooooooooo... I've got a good one for the community. My party is traveling in an area that is under a permanent Dimensional Lock and are attempting to Resurrect a party member. The question becomes: can they? Dimensional Lock blocks extradimensional travel, and we all know that when someone dies their soul travels to the plane of their alignment/deity. We're left wondering if the act of Resurrection count as "Extradimensional Travel"?

Can you site your sources for your claim, please?

I have no sources, but my gut says that you can. Dimensional lock and anchor seem meant to prevent phsycal travel, using spells like dimension door, ect. I dont see how it could effect a soul. If it could, that would be saying that the lock would prevent a soul from leaving the physical plane after it died in the first place, and that is the provence of trap the soul, a 9th level spell.

First, unless you ask with specific setting in mind most of the time death is not considered actual planar travel and thus resurrection would not be block by dimensional lock.

If you really want to consider death as planar travel of soul through the astral plane to destination plane then the following part of dimension lock would apply:

Quote:
A dimensional lock does not interfere with the movement of creatures already in ethereal or astral form when the spell is cast, nor does it block extradimensional perception or attack forms.

It would be subject to discussion if returning to body from astral travel (or sorts) is blocked by diemnsional travel or is considered mere movement of creature in astral form and thus subject to the quote above.

Another thing: dimensional lock is area effect centered on a point of space and thus immobile which means that most of the time the only real problem would be moving the body/caster away from the 20-ft.-radius emanation.

Both good points! Thank you! Making the DM think is fun. :)

Drejk, the reason this cam up initially was a passage found on page 208 of the Core Rule Book:

PFSRD Chapter 9: Magic wrote:
When a living creature dies, its soul departs its body, leaves the Material Plane, travels through the Astral Plane, and goes to abide on the plane where the creature's deity resides. If the creature did not worship a deity, its soul departs to the plane corresponding to its alignment. Bringing someone back from the dead involves magically retrieving his soul and returning it to his body.

The PC in question was Neutral aligned, so it's difficult to say where they are as well. How long do you stay on the Astral before finding your final resting spot?

So many questions!

Edit: The effect is effected by various metamagic items. Widen, blah blah blah. Space and the like is thrown out in this case. The unfortunate thing is: we cannot leave the place until we complete the dungeon to its fullest. All that aside, just interesting thoughts. Thanks for the help!

if the demensonial lock prevents plainular travel would not the PC's soul become a ghost traped in that area thus alowing the resurection to function as it retrieves the soul and now it dosent have to go as far to get it?

With adequate interretation of death:
If the person to be resurrected died while within range of dimensional lock GM *could* rule that it prevented soul from departing and it remains somewhere nearby as intangible, unconscious spark. In such case I would probably ruled that resurrection is possible - the soul is at hand, and the process could be actually faster or simpler than regular revival, as there is no need to conjure soul from its after life.
