Cost of a spell book

If I wanted to start with a NON magic user with the intention of multi classing at level 2, what could I expect to pay for one with say... 6 cantrips and 4 1st level spells.

Base cost for a blank book: 15gp

Cost of 6 cantrip scrolls: 75gp
Cost of 4 1st-level spell scrolls: 100gp
Material cost of inks to scribe 6 cantrips: 30g
Material cost of inks to scribe 4 1st-level spells: 40g

Total cost: 260g

Now, obviously there's a time investment too and your typical merchant will want to make a profit, so... I'd say 300-350g is not unreasonable.

Spellbook (p 158) = 15 gp

Inscribing spells (copied from other spellbook) cost 7½ for lvl-0 and 15 for lvl 1, totalling 105 gp for the spells in your case.
The fact that it is possible to sell spellbooks for half the cost of purchasing and inscribing the spells within, seems to suggest that the above price is the base price.

Given that you are not a spellcaster yourself, it is reasonable though, that it costs for you to have it done, than for a wizard who does it himself. Especially if you order specific spells to be written into the spellbook, instead of buying one with random spells inscribed.

I would add 50% extra to the cost of the spells, so the whole thing would cost 172.5 gp. It is more expensive than waiting until you get your wizard level, but cheaper than buying the spells as scrolls and inscribing them once you get the level.

In case your character just buy an off-the-rack spellbook (from the remains of a dead wannebe adventurer or something) and the GM chooses which spells are included, then I would let you have it for the "base price" of 120 gp.

The magic chapter gives prices for borrowing spellbooks, so there is an alternative to buying scrolls.

As a GM, I would give you the option at 1st level of taking wizard starting gold and equipment (spellbook & spell component pouch) rather than the starting gold for your other class.

Well, what your GM decides is final of course. However, when you take your first level as a wizard, you are supposed to start with a spellbook with all applicable cantrips and about half a dozen spells, and you really shouldn't have to pay for it.

I have an elf that is a 1st level rogue, but will be multiclassing to wizard. I put into her gear a spellbook (for encumberance purposes) and wrote it into her story. She studied wizardry, but let it fall by the wayside for decades in other pursuits. Now, prompted by the dangers she is facing as an adventurer, she is purusing her spellbook at every opportunity to refresh her knowledge to the point where she can cast again.

In my prior post I assumed that the spells was in addition to the ones you get at your first level as a spellcaster. But in case you are going to be a wizard that is not going to make sense, as they gain all level 0 spells in their spellbook.

I wouldn't have any problems allowing you to have a spellbook containing whatever spells you gain at the first level, as that is a part of the first level of the class.

Great story, great way around a silly rule!

When you take your first level of Wizard you get the regular starting spells (all core cantrips + 3 first level + 1 additional first level per point of Int bonus) in your book absolutely free of cost. You only have to pay for the book (15gp). Also, you don't have to spend time scribing your new book. You already did that, in your down time, while gaining the XP to take a level in Wizard.

Additional spells cost (lv^2)*10gp in writing materials plus half that for the spell itself and take 1 hour per level to scribe. Cantrips cost half the price of Lv 1 spells and take half the time.

So, 6 non-core cantrips plus 4 1st level spells would cost 70gp in materials, plus a 35gp fee to copy the spells from another Wizard's book, and take 7 hours to scribe.
Buying the book with these spells already in it wouldn't help since you must make a Spellcraft check to prep spells from a book you didn't write. Such a book would have a base price of 105gp.
