Dashio or the Big and Little

Samurai Discussion: Round 1

Silver Crusade

Dashio translates to the big and little blade. Katana and Wakizashi make up the big and little swords of Japan. Using the old method of of counting the Katana as a Bastard Sword. Along with using Wakizashi as a short sword. Never realy went over well with me. After using way to meny sword and other weapons for way to long. The Katana dose not realy have any thing like it in use or function. The Wakizashi is used more like a Scimitar in use and function. Both where made to cut extremly well and pierc. In use thay are used to cut and stabe not hack.

My suggestion is as follows.

Katana 1D8 18-20 critical threat X2 critical multiplier
It is too large to use in one hand without special training. thus it requires exotic weapon proficency Katana. A character can use a Katana two-handed as a martial weapon.

Wakizashi 1D6 18-20 critical threat X2 critical multiplier
One-Handed Melee Weapon

So Scimitar's...why not just call it a wakiashi a Scimitar then?

Silver Crusade

have you ever used a Scimitar? Scimitars cut thay don't hack. That is why thay are so difrent from a long sword or a bastard sword. Cuting is what a Wakiashi is used for not just piercing. Under the old rules Wakiashi used the same stats as a short sword. Why not just call it a short sword? Becous thay are very difrent weapons.

None of that has a thing to do with abstract combat in pathfinder. The stats you gave the wakiashi up there are the very same as a Scimitar.

The Katana was a much, much smaller weapon then the longsword{bastard sword} but game wise they are close, both are two handed weapons you had to train with and were hard to master one handed.

Game wise, wakiashi you make attack roll..Scimitar you make an attack roll

They work the very same way.

And anyway the sidebar that tells you use bastard sword for katana also says "for the purposes of this playtest". I imagine in the final book they'll have their own unique stats and they only told us to use bastard sword so they wouldn't have to print extra tables in the playtest document.

This I actually agree with, It shouldn't be superior in any way to any other weapon, we don't need to bloat the weapons we already have.

I Hope that what they present in UC is simply a discussion of How to translate different weapons to different cultures without having to give a whole new stat block for it.

The only change you need to slap on a short sword thats a wakizashi is make it slashing.
