Rules Questions

Lantern Lodge

In an attempt by my wife to build her Witch character, an interesting question arose that I thought to give voice to here. I realize the rules regarding adding new spells to a wizard's spellbook, but what about first level?

How many spells would you say a typical Level 1 character would have in their spellbook/familiar/prayerbook to start? I searched everywhere for an answer to this and couldn't come up with a decent answer nor could I even think of the best way to concoct an answer from thin air to give to my players.

Is there a rule that covers this and if not, how does everyone else handle it?

Spellbooks: A wizard must study his spellbook each day to prepare his spells. He cannot prepare any spell not recorded in his spellbook, except for read magic, which all wizards can prepare from memory.

A wizard begins play with a spellbook containing all 0-level wizard spells (except those from his prohibited schools, if any; see Arcane Schools) plus three 1st-level spells of his choice. The wizard also selects a number of additional 1st-level spells equal to his Intelligence modifier to add to the spellbook. At each new wizard level, he gains two new spells of any spell level or levels that he can cast (based on his new wizard level) for his spellbook. At any time, a wizard can also add spells found in other wizards' spellbooks to his own (see Magic).

There is indeed a rule. Under the Spellbooks section of the wizard class. A first level wizards spellbook contains all 0-level wizard spells (except for those of his prohibited schools if he is a specilist). It also contains 3 first level spells, plus one additional first level spell for each point of his Intelligence bonus.

It should all be covered right in the class description. For wizards, it is described under the heading "spellbook". For witches it is described under "witch's familiar".

Yep, I am SOOO glad I hit refresh. Still was ninja'd. But at least it didn't hurt as bad. As the others said. Right there under the heading "spellbook" on page seventy nine for the wizzie.

There is also the possibility of adding even more spells at first level (with the GM's permission of course), by spending some of your starting cash on access and copying spells - 7.5gp per cantrip and 15 gp per first level spell.

That's actually funny :D We had the same problem earlier today when making my Girlfriend a Witch. We too searched high and low and found a great big nothing.

I (being the GM) ended up handwaving it and just used the Wizard rule of 3+int mod spells at 1st level. It worked out nicely for us :)

I also think that the Witch should have "Endure elements" as a first level spell, but that's something else entirely :)

Appreciate the quick response to this subject. First response took less than minutes! =D

Anyways, I honestly don't know how I missed that. I must've glanced over that line when skimming the Wizard's description.

So, looking through the APG, where would I find the similar line for Witches? Or is it more implied than anything? If its not listed, I'll just use the Wizard's ruling since its simple and the two are similar regardless. Just want to know where it is in the APG since I'm actively looking for it and I know what to look for wording-wise now.

Thanks to everyone. Look forward to picking your brains when I'm having mind blanks at a later date.

I checked the srd and the book and couldn't find it, wizard rules looks good to me

APG page67 top paragraph on the right hand side.

Excerpt from APG wrote:

Hey look, there it is...
Must have skimmed over that at least 3 timed... Lol
Just like the wizard anyway, all is well in the world.

Agreed and thanks to all for the help.

Problem solved. Mission accomplished. Crisis averted. World saved.
