That is, if I wanted to post this image on a thread, as something GMs could overlay onto the official country map:
A (likely poorly) handdrawn map of a country that approximates its shape and important locations rather than tracing and/or copying them exactly, along with a number of new additions?
If that's too much, would keeping the general shape without the canonical landmarks be acceptable?
Or would it be best to just stick to only text and approximate locations relative to the existing landmarks?

It definitely treads on their IP.
However, that's what the CUP (Community Use Policy) is for. Specifically, the following:
• You may use any of the text or artwork published in the Paizo Blog at paizo.com/paizo/blog, with the exception of any excerpts of Planet Stories publications and any logos and icons that aren't also in the Community Use Package. You may not use any photographs published in the blog (because those rights are usually not ours to offer). You may not use artwork, including maps, that have not been published in the blog, although you may create your own interpretations of material presented in our artwork and maps, provided that your interpretations don't look substantially similar to our materials.
So the answer is: So long as the maps you create look substantially different from the maps that Paizo creates, then you may use them (so long as they fit with the rest of the CUP.) I would think that general country shape alone isn't going to be a problem, but if you basically just recolor/style a Paizo map, you definitely have a problem.

Gotcha. Think I'm going to go with just text. I'd like to do a map(a more abstracted one than an exact copy) but it's just enough of a fuzzy area for me to not feel good about it without thinking I'm disrespecting Paizo. That and I can't draw to save my life anyway, and putting map drawing duties in someone else's hands would just complicate my worries stated above.
Thanks.

Many of the locations on The Wiki already have maps done up by Aeakett

Archmage_Atrus is right—what you describe sounds fine (so long as you follow the rest of the Community Use Policy).
Wow, sorry for the extraordinarily late reply. Thanks for the confirmation!
Just to play it completely safe, would it be a good idea to send the relevant images(or the entire pdf) to you or someone else at Paizo just to make sure everything is kosher?
(and then I realize just how forward that sounds considering how busy everyone is at Paizo...)

I often have a free-hand map drawn by an NPC - like this - to give to the characters as a play aid. Obviously it normally only gets shown to players in the game in question... but I'm a map-freak and like drawing them!

Yeah, we really don't have time to look at people's stuff. If there's a problem, we'll probably hear about it and then ask you to fix it politely; we won't immediately send the assassins at you.

Aces! And thanks! Just wanted to make sure I don't step on anyone's toes. :)

I'm having trouble loading the image at my current location, but I really do want to check this out.

Some assassins work for PDF's.
