Animal Companions / summons and turn actions

Rules Questions

Grand Lodge

So I have a new group starting and for the first time I have a player that is using a summoner. I've never had to deal with animal companions or summons before so I'm not sure where in the phb it has the rules for turn actions available to that player. I really just need know if both he and his summon can act on his turn or if the actions are split up between them both.

Anyone know?

Summons act on the summoner's turn just. Animal companions really have their own initiative because they are essentially their own character, but for the sake of ease every DM I know has them go on the PC's turn.

PRD(summon monster 1)=This spell summons an extraplanar creature (typically an outsider, elemental, or magical beast native to another plane). It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn.

I don't know that there are any explicit rules regarding this, but it understood that an animal companion and an Eidolon are seperate entities, and have their own actions/attacks seperate from the PC that summoned them.

His summon monster ability? (Read summon monster spell, it tells you.) Or are you talking aobut the Eidelon? Eidelons take a miniute to summon. (10 rounds) page 55 advanced players guide.

Talking about his Eidelon which he already has out.

So say he and his eidelon get into a fight with some kobolds. Does he get to run around casting spells and his eidelon beat on stuff or is it one or the other gets to act.

They both get to act. The summoner does not have to concentrate to direct the eidolon in battle.

Same with a druid or ranger and their animal companion.
Or a wizard and their familiar.

Thanks ya kindly, my player will be wanting to hear this news so he can run around shooting wands at stuff lol.

If the Eidolon is already there he can have it roll it's own initiative, but if the eidolon rolls lower than the summoner I would hold him to it. As stated before it is easier to have both of them go on the summoners initiative.

PS:I just read the question again. They both get turns. I would not allow the eidolon unless both of you know the rules(for summoners and eidolons) well. There have been quiet a few "eidolons are broken" threads lately, and every time it is because the mistakes were being made during the creation process.
